4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
UPDATED: SEP 4, 2013 On tap at the grand opening. Clear orange gold. Lemony grapefruit aroma, weed, acidic citrus. Malt is subdued, no sweetness to it. Perfect for an IPA. Citric hoppy without a whole lot of bitterness. Nice IPA.
Re-rate 9/4/13 from fresh growler: Pours a chill-hazed bronze orange with a thick eggshell head. Aroma has a lot of classic grapefruit character but also a lemon verbena tinge and some mild florals. Oily dank hops coat the palate, giving a refreshing illusion of acidity. Unripe grapefruit gives this resin bomb some fruitiness. The bitterness synergizes with the oily character of the hops, creating a round finish that maintains a lot of bite. As for the malt, itís there -- but only to prop up the body. It really doesnít impact the flavor very much at all, maybe a slight sourdough breadiness, but certainly no godawful heavy caramel or crystal influence. Palate-wise, Iíve had many beers with similar hop profiles that turn astringent with warmth, or that turn soapy once your tastes buds get acclimated to the hop oils. Thatís not the case here. Even on pint 3, the beer remains fresh on the tongue without any off-notes.
My old rating is from Batch 1; I figure this deserved a new look -- glad I did. Bumped from 3.8 to 4.2. Cheers Tim!
