COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Appreciation is a barrel-aged farmhouse ale fermented with boysenberries and our resident funk. After several months in red wine barrels, it has taken on a mouth-watering acidity, a whiff of the barnyard, and stronger aromas and flavors attributed to the fruit. Appreciation’s ruby red color entices, welcoming another sip, another clink of glasses with friends, another moment of contentment and contemplation. With gratitude, we humbly offer our appreciation. Sante!

Bottle shared at Sean’s Tasting (Ann Arbor, MI). Pours a decent hazed reddish ruby hue, well hazed with frothy whitish head, touch of pink. Mellow layer, sticks around as a filmy layer, laces ok. Nice glowing hue and berry. Aromas are berryskin, a bit pulpy. Lactic and lovely with some nice sournessn boysenberry and blackberry, touches of funk and lactic life. Lemon, yogurt, some straw and decent yeast. Tart and nice, mellow nose is quite enjoyable. Initial is sour, firmly lactic with boysenberry, touches of funk and lactic yogurty feels. Some nice berryskin, gentle blackberry and boysenberries. Touches of oak, richer red wine tannic feel hits the palate into the middle. Tart, tannic and oaky. Some nice funk compliments fairly well. Berryskin, a bit sticky, tannic and oak. Subtle vanilla, lingering firm yogurt. Nice. Red wine tannin really works well. It’s not strong but it’s sufficient and compliments well. The sourness falls behind a bit, but overall, is quite tasty.

Another great beer from SA sampled at the FoFA. Pours a beautiful deep maroon poor with pinkish head. Aroma is berrys, light funk, and wine. Taste starts off as sour wine and finishes with some jammy berries in the end and a zing of tartness. This brewery is legit.

HFS 2013 Farmhouse Festival. Poured a murky violet color with a ring of foam. Lots of funky yeasty notes, touch of sulfur and unripe berry on the nose. Palate followed with a bright tartness and some lactic tang on the finish. Good subdued rustic berry notes a bit more earthy than I expected but happy to try for sure !

UPDATED: APR 2, 2014 A- nice pink raspberry, guava hue with a thin layer of light pink head that dissipates quickly. S- amazing aromas of jams, raspberry, lemon, funk, red wine vinegar, oranges, musty oak and some saltiness. Almost geuze-ish. M- perfectly light, tart and acidic palate with a light creamy and airy body that is quite refreshing. T- tart lemon juice and raspberry start. Unripe blackberries, some grasses, sweet tarts, Sauvignon Blanc and vinegar towards the middle. Ending is efficient with lactic acid and faint raspberry pie. O - a damn good barrel aged fruity drink of goodness. A++ Sante!

Bottle shared at Sour Sunday at Jupiter Brewpub. Pours an attractive guava color, totally opaque with haze, with a clingy pinkish white head. Aroma is fantastic: tons of jammy dark berries with a lemonade tartness. Strawberries and oranges make an appearance too. Flavor is lactic and tart with lemon rind, Himalayan blackberries, raspberry lemonade. Great acidity on the back end, really hits the corners of the mouth and dries the palate. Awesome beer.

Bottle, generously shared by bird_machine - thanks! Pours a cloudy red with a medium pink head that leaves nice lacing on the glass. Aroma is tart cherry, funk, fruityness. Flavor is the same, medium plus tartness, some cherry and non-descript fruitiness, not much sweetness, with a dry finish. Definitely a nice beer, but a little short on the complexity of the best of its peer group. Maybe will develop some complexity after more time in the bottle, but I doubt I will ever know :). Medium body, nice soft mouthfeel.

UPDATED: JUN 12, 2013 750ml waxed top, shared among friends. Removed cap and was immediately welcomed by a sweet, sharp berry aroma with very slight hints of that floral, hay resident funk that is clearly developing in all their funky beers. The beer pours a hazy pale pink with a head that dies down fairly quickly leaving a ring of fizzy small bubbles and noticeable legs, no lacing. More big juicy berry aromas, slight lactic notes, fruity esters, not as funky as Saison Bernice or Maiden Fields, but that’s okay since the fruit is the main show here. Taste has lots of raspberry flavors, somewhat jammy, juicy, medium carbonation, mild acid, mild funk, medium body with a slightly sweet tart finish. As it warmed, a few more sips reveal a very deep complex woody note, some kind of dark grape flavors, cherry skins, blackberry juice, slight oak tannin, no hop bitterness. Overall it appears to be young, and I only say that because of how much Maiden Fields and Bright Sea Blonde changed in the bottles. I can only imagine that the beer will develop more funky aromas with a slightly less sweet and a more dry finish. An incredibly special release for a joyous occasion. Happy Anniversary Sante! Looking forward to many more.
