COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Appreciation is a barrel-aged farmhouse ale fermented with boysenberries and our resident funk. After several months in red wine barrels, it has taken on a mouth-watering acidity, a whiff of the barnyard, and stronger aromas and flavors attributed to the fruit. Appreciationís ruby red color entices, welcoming another sip, another clink of glasses with friends, another moment of contentment and contemplation. With gratitude, we humbly offer our appreciation. Sante!

In short: A funky-lactic and tart ale with lots of sweet red fruits. Very good.
How: From a bottle at Hill Farmstead FoFA 2013.
The look: Cloudy bright red body topped by a small white head.
In long: The powerful nose has plenty of berries along with a strong farmhouse character. Inviting aroma. In mouth the beer has a soft medium body, a juicy texture, a relaxed carbonation, an adequate mouthfeel for the style. Taste blends farmhouse character, lactic funk (borderline yogurt), fruity raspberry-like tartness, acidity and lots of sweet berries. The overall sweetness sesnsation was similar to maraschino cherries. A very good beer that could have been excellent with more attenuation, a personal preference here. A good beer but it doesnít explain why my wife is so obsessed with it, I need to get her some bottles because every day she reminds me I need to show her some Appreciation, itís been a whale for her years before the beer was even released.

Bottle shared at Seanís Tasting (Ann Arbor, MI). Pours a decent hazed reddish ruby hue, well hazed with frothy whitish head, touch of pink. Mellow layer, sticks around as a filmy layer, laces ok. Nice glowing hue and berry. Aromas are berryskin, a bit pulpy. Lactic and lovely with some nice sournessn boysenberry and blackberry, touches of funk and lactic life. Lemon, yogurt, some straw and decent yeast. Tart and nice, mellow nose is quite enjoyable. Initial is sour, firmly lactic with boysenberry, touches of funk and lactic yogurty feels. Some nice berryskin, gentle blackberry and boysenberries. Touches of oak, richer red wine tannic feel hits the palate into the middle. Tart, tannic and oaky. Some nice funk compliments fairly well. Berryskin, a bit sticky, tannic and oak. Subtle vanilla, lingering firm yogurt. Nice. Red wine tannin really works well. Itís not strong but itís sufficient and compliments well. The sourness falls behind a bit, but overall, is quite tasty.

Sampled at FoFA 2013. Pours ruby with a pinkish head. Aroma of berries, some oak and wine, a nice sour note, some funk, and light malts. Flavor the same, not as refined as some sours. Average texture. A good beer.

750ml bottle... Pours an attractive shade if raspberry red, softer edges, and topped with a soapy white head... Soft red berries, not totally assertive, but def not to be missed. Slight funk and mild sourness. Solid but a little calmer compared to west Ashley. Still very solid... Berry lactic sourness. Solid with a slight husk grain backend. Some lemony sourness to mesh with the berries. Really nicely executed.

shimmering ruby, thin large bubbled white head. Muted thin cherry nose, lightly pithy with buttery oak emerging. Rubbery flavor, cherry and fusel hints, heavy seed bitterness with incredibly short bitter finish.

Bottle shared by Alan on Christmas. Pours hazy cranberry red with small head and random lacing. Notes are tart raspberry, barn, acidic funk, strawberry seeds cherries, oak, and lemon skin. The pucker creeps on you, candy funk yo. Thit, a little thin but no worries, smell and taste is that sour candy straw goodness.
