UPDATED: NOV 28, 2012 From memory off tap at brewery. Roasted malt overtones of chocolate and roasted coffee, with tart nuances of a sour beer. Medium-light bodied. Well made and enjoyable. Retried a few more times throughout the month, noticing less sour profile and simply more roasted malt body... Which I enjoyed more. --- tasted while on a long journey to understand the world around me...

[2/13/15] Draught at Sante Adairius Rustic Ales in Capitola. Dark brown to black with a beige head. Aroma of roast, some coffee and a bit of licorice. Flavor is quite bitter and roasty with coffee, a bit of cocoa, and a more bitter finish. Medium-bodied.

Draft at SARA with Linh. Pours a deep brownish black body with thin brown lacing. Aroma is earthy roast and a touch of ash. Mouthfeel is medium to medium plus with notes of rich, earthy roast, smooth malt, light wood, and bitter chocolate. No wonder Vanilla Joe kills it, assuming this is the base beer recipe.

On draft at Sante Adairius. Dark brown, cream head recedes to ring and patches. Nose of savoury roasty coffee notes, tastes moderate sweet burnt sugar and more coffee, roast malt, touch of cocoa and vanilla. Then some hop bitterness. Shortish finish, medium body, thinnish.

Very dark beer with no lasting head. Looks almost like a glass of coke. Slight fizz and mild treacly/malty taste. Nicely drinkable even though I don’t usually drink dark beers. (K)

Sampled at SARA. Aroma is burnt barley, roasted coffee with light touches of vanilla. Flavor is that of a nice bold porter that I would have guessed was way over 6.5 %. Flavor of a imperial. Burnt coffee, deep chocolate, barley, toasty. Mouth feel is a tad light but right for a porter under 7%. Marvelous job.

On draft at SARA. Aroma is intense dark chocolate and coffee. Pours dark brown to black with a very light brown head; almost off white. Taste is semi sweet chocolate with dark bread notes. Hints of cocoa with coffee roast. Mildly astringent.

On tap at the brewery. Aroma is moderately toasty with a nice creamy oatmeal and chocolate character. Clean yeast character with faint hop notes. Pours dark brown, but not quite black with a moderately thick, tan head that slowly recedes to the edges where it lingers. Moderately high lacing with faint legs. Flavor has medium sweetness with moderate roast and light chocolate notes. Light oat character. Clean yeast character with hints of fruit esters. Low earthy and woodsy hop notes with medium low bitterness. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with medium carbonation. Low astringency and low alcohol warmth. Overall, a pretty nice, clean porter. Lots of dark malt character, but it may be missing a bit of the English yeast character and lighter malt notes.
