4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 15/20
UPDATED: FEB 8, 2014 Bottle at the brewery. Hand marked "1 of few"
A - pours dark cola brown with low off white head with some lacing. S - this is a nice combo of porter and sour beer. Chalky, toasted malts. Very typical porter. Light chocolate and dark malts. Then come the sour wine aging! Tart berries and cherry notes, oaky red wine aromas. Interesting to catch almost two separate beers in the aroma. M - tart but not over bearing. Bright crisp body. Light up front to a slightly thicker maltier end. T - tart lacto, lemon juice, light vinegar right up front. Red wine, oak tannins, tart red berries and cherries follow. The palate is the standard tasty porter. Toasty dark malts, chalky chocolate, and earth swim around in this fantastic blend of porter and wine barrel sour. O -amazing! I was skeptical of a sour barrel aged porter. Sante proved me wrong. They are my favorite brewery for sure. Right up there with stave and HF. Sours/wilds/saisons oh my.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Dark brown with a light tan head that dissipates. Very fresh. Earthy farmhouse feel with fruit and sharp barrel sour. Pickle puckering. Mild coffee cocoa roast. Body is thin but it goes great with the sour palate. Sour dominates the roast.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle shared at Sean’s Tasting (Ann Arbor, MI). Pours a deeper blackish brown hue, nice haziness in the body with frothy tannish head. Dies to a mellow ring, sticks around as a filmy layer and laces small. Aromas are cocoa and toffee, touches of clove and spice, sour cherries and lemon, lactic elements and funk. Touches of oak, vanilla, and toast. Some decent sourness mixes with that darker malt body. Initial is a bit tart, some firmer lactic elements with cherries, some red fruit, lemony and lactic. Nice tartness, lactic and tart, some cherry, flash ofred fruit up front tapers out. Middle is tart, firmly and sticks well. Lemony and lactic life, some gentle oak, gentle cocoa and roasty toast dustings into the backend. Some gentle spice, richer oak, vanillin and still some nice tart sour lactic elements keep moving on. A nice ode to the base still keeps kicking. Sour and lactic life but still a nice base feel. Very nice, incorporates everything quite well. Tasty.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle, shared with gyberic, poured into snifter glasses. Dark liquid with red hues escapes the neck of the bottle and splashes into the glass unlocking its lactic aroma. A foamy, two finger head sets ontop of the beer, while very little light permeates the liquid. Aroma is complex, with woody/wine notes, slight grape, and cherry subtleties that turns to a recognizable base of deep roast, and slight dark chocolate. Bright carbonation is noticed upon the first few sips with a nice jammy berry flavor, and lactic taste that is seriously the perfect level. Nice level of roast, leather and slight vinegar sits on the palate. Not much noticeable chocolate.. Aftertaste is more of the berry/cherry combo with plenty of lingering roast to remind us of the base beer. No lacing on the glass, but leaves behind small legs. Overall, an interesting mix of sour and roast that is pretty balanced. I am glad the sourness doesn’t overpower the main point of this beer. Well done!

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Aroma is fairly dominated by red wine and oak with some of the base beer present. Light roast, coffee and chocolate. Light acidity in the aroma. As it warms the malt becomes more noticeable.
Pours black with a thin light mocha head that recedes to the edges fairly quickly. No lacing and moderate legs.
Flavor is very wine forward with a lot of tart berry and cherry notes. Light chocolate and roast, but most of the malt character has receded. The acidity is clean, lactic and well balanced. Much like in the aroma, the malt becomes more noticeable as the beer warms. Medium low bitterness.
Mouthfeel is medium bodied withe medium low carbonation. Low but present astringency, likely from the acid and medium low alcohol warmth.
Overall a good dark sour, but I think I am starting to like dark sours less; the acidify always seems to wash out the base beer. There is a lot of nice fruitiness to it and the acidity is well balanced. Good wine and oak notes.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Dark brownie batter pour with a creamy latte head. Nose of cocoa dust, mild freshly ground coffee, lemon zest, merlot, oak, and a tart lactic sourness. Lots of complexity in the aroma. Flavor is a bit more one dimensional with the ’Pucker overpowering the Chavez’. Loads of soured milk, unripened berry, and green citrus. Missing the roast. Nice velvety mouthfeel. Really good beer!

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle. I missed this release, so hella thanks to felipe for sharing this with me! Pours deep brown to black with a small brown head and decent lacing on the glass. Aroma is roasty, cocoa, light notes of smoke, vinous. Fairly light on the nose overall. Flavor follows, lightly tart and roasty, some fruity/vinous notes. A bit of oaky astringence leading to a dry finish. Fairly light bodied, but smooth.
