Can. Silky Yebisu was pretty good, so thought I'd give this one a burl. Sweet aromas brown sugar, soy sauce and malt. Mild carbonation. Not nearly as sticky as I'd expected, but not too watery either. Good balance of richness and taste. Good stuff. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

On tap. Pour is opaque black with a big beige head. Aroma of roasted malts and chocolate. Roasted malty flavor with chocolate and some caramel, but not too sweet. Medium mouthfeel, creamy, not too thick. Hops are present but not front and center. Nice beer. Much better than I expected. Easy drinking and worth finding again. Went well with the sashimi. Enjoyed in Narita, Japan.

Milk chocolate, earthy aroma. Roasted malt flavor, mild toffee, coffee beans, clean finish. Quite drinkable, even though a bit light in flavors for a dark brew.

Can from supermarket. Small nose of chocolate and a bit of prune. Dark brown, light tan head. Very mild roast initial / decent balance in mid / finish has very minimal flavors, for a dark. Thin-medium body, mayeb just a bit too thin. Okay. Very drinkable. I think I like the regular Yebisu Black Beer better than this one. What I’d love is to have the old (retired?) Sapporo Black again; that was a superb beer (see Michael Jackson on black beer).

A can from Seijo Ishii for 240 yen. It had a decent malt aroma. I wasn’t expecting much from a macrobrew but the taste was a nice balance of caramel, chocolate and some roastiness. A good bet for someone looking for a dark beer from a convenience store.

Can. Chocolate, lightly roasted nose, caramel, a bit of raisin, cherry, Reasonably nice malt nose. Very black, with some orange-amber tints on the edge, and a nice tan head. Roasted malt and chocolate flavor, some coffee, wood. Not too sweet, and a roasty finish. Pretty decent body too—medium. Light but full. I should have this side-by-side with the regular black to tell the difference, but on first try, it does seem to be less sweet and to have a more roasted character, like the first version of Black that was around in 2006. It doesn’t really have all that much flavor, though, and can’t compare with the draught version when it’s fresh.
