1.1 AROMA 2/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 2/10 PALATE 1/5 OVERALL 4/20 JoeMcPhee (6835) - Toronto, ON, Ontario, CANADA - JUN 28, 2007
12 oz can. Very pale golden beer with a thick white head. Aroma is quite subtle, thin pale malt, a bit of metallic character that isn’t so nice. Flavour is very thin and watery and completely lacking in character. Moderate bitterness but with so little malt, it is fairly prominent. With a bit of shaking, the metallic character dissipates, becoming a less offensive, but still pedestrian lager.

500 ml bottle. Clear golden color, weak head that quickly disapates, bold malty aromas. Taste is clean and nutty, light hops. Mouthfeel somewhat watered down. Well balanced finish.

3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 Doppelganger (1383) - Dry County, Arkansas, USA - MAR 29, 2007
Can, 48 hours away from Japan from my friend Takihero. Golden with a layer of white foam. Clean grainy malt aroma, delicate herbal hops, a touch of brine. Smooth round bread, given brightness with a lively level of carbonation. The backdrop of hops show of a bit more as the sip finishes, a bit of lingering tartness. Hop presence grows a bit through the glass. My expectations for this were for a fairly bog standard lager, but this is actually rather nice.

A gift from Tim E. A balanced well made beer that didn’t do much for me. I understand this is a Japanese standard and by that standard it blows the major Canadian beers out of the water. Page 407 of Michael Jackson’s Great Beer Guide and only 260 of his 500 Classic Brews to go.
