Thank you for this gift Chris. Pours a clear pale golden with a weak white head. Aroma consists of yeast, grain, and a bit of grass. The taste is very grainy. Maybe some hay. Grainy taste at the end with a bit of yeast. Short aftertaste. Light body with a thin texture. There is quite a bit of carbonation in here. I’ve had worse. However, since I will never find this anywhere remotely close in my part of the world, the novelty factor is pretty high.

A Japanese place on St. Mark’s, NY bottle: Pours golden with a fizzy white head. Aroma is grain, rice, and a bit of yeast. Taste is mildly bitter, very light, but with some interesting notes that remind you that this is a beer. I would even go so far as to say that there is some complexity in this beer. Anyway, it ain’t bad, but I got a soft spot for Japanese lagers.

330ml bottle @Tokyo Season, Manchester. Golden/straw coloured clear and sparkly body. Spare diminishing head. Flowers, perfume, grass and hay to the nose. Dry notes. Tastes of dry hops, soap and hint of pineapple. Probably better with sushi.

Can from Seven Eleven, Mito, Ibaraki, Japan. A golden coloured pour with a medium white head on top. Malty, slightly hoppy aroma, tastes similar malty, hoppy and crisp. I’ve always quite enjoyed this one, it goes particularly well with Japanese cuisine.

I just saw my last Japanese premium lager rating and to be honest I’m not especially optimistic. It looks like most other premium lagers only with a touch more haze. It smells like most other premium lagers too. Mainly lager malt and very little hopping. Cool and prickly in the mouth, samey-samey golden lager flavour. Nothing terribly special, but not unpleasant either.

We organized a very interesting tasting of Lagers (basic to average quality): 16 different beers from different countries. Price range: from EUR 0.3/bt (supermarket) to EUR 3.5/bt (take-away at sushi bar). All beers have been blind-tasted; we were 4 people, great beer lovers and wanted to know If there is a difference between all these basics summer beers. Answer: no, all were more our less watery, the worst were shit. Sapporo Yebisu was the best one. Here is the ranking: #1 Sapporo Yebisu #2 Baltika 3 #3 Duff #4 Obolon Svitle #5 Svyturys Ekstra Draught #6 Heineken #7 Kirin Ichiban #8 1664 #9 Carlsberg #10 Burger #11 Kronenbourg #12 Pilsner Urquell #13 Königsbacher #14 33 Export #15 Tsingtao #16 Asahi

Clearly others are not pairing. This dry toasty beer is meant to be paired with rice and fish. Not only is the mouth feel paramount to enjoying your meal and beer but the carbonation and crispiness aid digestion. Smooth creamy beer which outperforms nearly all of its competition. See you at the (sushi) bar.

Eh I guess this is better than the other Japanese macro lagers but it’s still nothing special. Very light flavors and aromas of grains and malts.
