3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bottle from Winter Variety 12 pack. Very dark brown, almost black. Frothy mocha head. The aroma is ash and wood, with a very distant hint of chocolate and alcohol. Medium bodied, great porter flavors of wood, roasted malt, light coffee, slight acidic twang. Finishes dry and bitter, Saranac offerings usually lean towards astringent hopping, and this is no exception, but it comes across well. The mouthfeel is lean and well attenuated.

3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
A black beer with a tan head. Roasted malt, toffee flavours. Semi-sweet but also a tad bitter aftertaste. Heavy.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Deep, dark chocolate brown. One finger of light brown head. It looks like a very legitimate porter. Leaves a decent lace.
Aroma is a soft, nutty malt: hazelnut, mocha, breakfast blend coffee with just a touch of sweet (but not too sweet) caramel. Iím shocked at how good the aroma is on this.
Taste is nutty, but less pronounced than the aroma. As it warms up, the coffee bitterness really explodes. The nuttiness balances the sugar/caramel sweetness very well. Itís almost like a coffee with cream but also a shot of espresso.
The feel is chalky and dusty. This is a very solid beer, I should hope that Saranac would keep it in their regular rotation.

2.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 6/20
Slightly sweet and roasted smell with a nice dark and smooth appearance. good taste but overall a pretty normal and generic porter. Would drink it again but i would choose many other porters over this one.

3.4 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Pours a coppery black with a medium tan head. Little aroma, mostly malt. Notes of chocolate and roasted malt up front, bit of a sweet caramel aftertaste. One of saranac better dark beers

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
12 ounce bottle with a best before date of March 31, 2014, one of my friends gave this to me last week. Served in a pint glass, the beer pours dark brown with an inch tan head. Head retention is good, and thereís a decent amount of lacing. Aroma is nice, the brew smells like milk and bittersweet chocolate, roasted malt, char, and some coffee. I think the taste is just like the aroma, but the roasty/char flavor is the strongest. Mouthfeel/body is light, it seems thin for a porter. With that being said, it is pretty easy to drink. Overall I liked this brew, itís a good roasty porter that hopefully Iíll get to try fresher sometime.

2.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 9/20
Pours from the bottle with a rich, opaque, dark-chocolate brown color. The aroma is dominated by milk chocolate, but there are also some oaty grains and a little vanilla. The flavor is the liquid equivalent of burnt toast, though, with a grainy, assertive bitterness that overwhelms the chocolate. Even if they were going for a robust porter, there is too much over-roasted character to be enjoyed.
