Comes across as a very drinkable stout, with very mild roast. Good, but a little watery.

2.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
12 oz bottle from backlog notes. Pours dark brown in color with a small beige head. The aroma and flavor have an odd roasted malt, stale coffee, some earth, thin, doesn’t present even as a basic stout. Meh.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
The head is tan, thick, and it makes good lacing on my pint glass. Roasted malts, hops, caramel and toffee notes, fill your nose. On the tongue there are flavor notes of roasted malts, toast, espresso, and wild tart blackberries. The bitterness of the hops surrounds and balances everything nicely and leads to a slow bitter finish. It has a nice medium body and a creamy smooth mouth feel that makes it very enjoyable.

Transfer from BA review on 4-10-12 -
Poured from bottle into pint glass
Appearance – Pours a deep brown color with a tan head. The head had some retention and faded giving a small amount of lacing.
Smell – The aroma is of some roasted malt with hints of chocolate. There is a light vanilla aroma in the nose as well.
Taste – The taste of nice dark chocolate and roasted malt. The flavor has some sweetness up front with flavors of vanilla and caramel sweetness.
Mouthfeel – The body is slightly above average and has a good creaminess. The carbonation is on the lighter side and is quite nice for the brew. Overall it is a very nice mouthfeel.
Overall – This was a rather tasty and affordable brew. It had a nice smooth flavor and mouthfeel profile and made for a good session beer.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Reviewed from notes. Consumed March 28, 2012.
She pours a jet black color and leaves the same colored body with a slight brown around the edges. The head dissipates within seconds.
The smell has a slightly creamy sweet blend of coffee and has some toasted bread character to it.
The taste is nutty and chocolate sweetness with a tinge of bitter coffee at the end.
On the palate, she sits about a light to medium, slightly sessionable with a tangy aftertaste and finish.
Overall, it is a decent brew that I might have again.

Black and Tan’s in a bottle never really taste like black and tan’s but there’s something to be said for beer mixes. This one is decent. Has some roasted quality, some chocolate, and the mildness and mouthfeel of an amber. Off flavors abound unfortunately.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Found this bottle in the back of my fridge, and it’s at least a couple of years old. The look, aroma, and taste are pure stout--there is none of the typical black and tan mix of flavors. With that said, the flavor is definitely pleasant enough, bittersweet and nutty, with a bittersweet, roasty finish.

2.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 11/20
6/24/2011: Saranac Black & Tan (Stout & Lager)... Aroma: Coffee with creamer, milk chocolate, caramel sweetness in the background. Appearance: Hazy brunette with a nice beige-colored, bubbly head and decent lacing. Flavor: Oddly sweet and creamy with a misplaced coffee acidity and dry, roasted, and herbal bitterness in the finish; notes of artificial coffee creamer, sweet caramel, weird chocolate, and ash pop up here and there; bitterness is moderate, but is misplaced and quite PEPPERY - just not the right profile for the beer. Palate: Medium to medium-full body. Overall: Definitely not one of my favorites and definitely not a harmonious blend of stout and lager.
12 fl. oz. bottle from Kroger in Harrison, Ohio. Rating #770 for this beer.

2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 6/20
Yet another 12 oz. bottle purchased at Oliver’s Beverage Center. English pint shows a dark brown color with thin off white head that died quickly. Nose is malty, nutty with hints of fruit. Taste is weak and all over the place. Chocolate, caramel with toffee tone. The off putting thing is a strange wheat sourness that really should be here. The body is toasted grain with a watery, super thin texture. Odd yeast tones. This MAYBE a way to introduce a stout to somebody who has never had one but… I sure the hell wouldn’t. I would offer a good home brew before this. This is my 12th offering from Matt Brewing, doesn’t make me want any more beer from this brewery.

3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Bottle. Pours a very dark brown with a thin off-white head. Nose is a bit dry like a dry stout. Taste is much the same, yet feels somewhat light.
