obguthr (707), Poquoson, Virginia, USA Apr 26, 2008 Aroma is a little yeasty and smells of roasted chestnuts. Rust colored with a thin tan head. Flavor is lightly toasted malt and nuts. Finishes sweet and slightly tart. Strangely upside-down, as if drinking a normal beer backwards, bitter then sweet.
General_Gao (2405), Iowa City, Iowa, USA Jul 21, 2008 12oz bottle. Not much in the way of aroma other than some subdued sausage, stale cereal grain, and a hint of steeping barley. I also got an occasional whiff of cinnamon donut. Poured a clear amber color. The head was off white and reduced to a thin film after a minute or so. There was some lace on the glass at the end. Medium bodied and sweet with some dry fruit up front followed by corn sugar, toffee, and graham cracker flavors. Eh. So so. Trooper11 (439), Suffolk, Virginia, USA Jul 14, 2008 Clear amber brew, lots of bubbles. Sour mash aroma with nutty notes. Nice alcohol burn to it immediately, deep. Flavor is sour walnuts. Dry nutty finish. tgncc (220), Bellmore, New York, USA Jun 29, 2008 Aroma is ok, a strange mix of chocolate, fruit and nuts; like a Cadbury bar. The appearance is a pleasing ruby red with white head. The flavor is toasted malty sweet, a little nutty. The finish is bittersweet, with a strange coffee taste, some slight hoppyness. Not bad, especially for Saranac. (Rating #1760) tarc (41), New Jersey, USA May 21, 2008 Malty aroma, not too strong, medium amber color with minimal head, slighly sweet very smooth malty flavor. Looking for hops? Won;t find many here... One of the more under-rated beers I’ve found. Very drinkable.
