COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Caramel malt sweetness and trademark rich, creamy head. A fitting homage to our Grandfather’s apprenticeship at the Duke of Baden’s brewery in Germany’s Black Forest region.

Although I liked the body, there wasn’t much flavor to back it up. Flavors, of malt and caramel in the finish, but not much more than that, I’d like to see more flavor in this beer.

Wonderful black colour and creamy head. Carmely malty aroma and tatse throughout. Thats about all there is to it thouh. Who knew something so dark could be so flavourless? Nice finish though. So close to something good, just way too bland.

as i work my way through the nice 12 saranac sampler, i generally find them respectable but underpowered; like carrying a load of logs in your minivan, you wish there was more umph. the black forest for example is very attractive to a thirsty individual such as myself. deep mahogany with a garnet glint. fig or raisin leads the aroma, some warm aunt jemima syrup perhaps. moderate sweetness, enough body to preclude a watery finish. overall quite good, but even more malt would make it better still.

What is the differance between this and the saranac black and tan? I couldn’t find it.

Another decent Saranac product, but nothing great. Still drink it from time to time.

UPDATED: MAR 2, 2003 A very nice bavarian brew. Nice and dark, the color did resemble a black forest. This one definetely needs to be enjoyed with a nice big slice of chocolate cake.

Hmm... the description says it has a creamy head, but when I poured it, mine was without one. That would have added a point to my appearance rating. All in all a good dark beer, smooth body without being bitter like a lot of dark beers tend to be. Good malt/hop balance. I’d get it again.

Too dark for my liking. Goes great with a big meal, though.
