COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Caramel malt sweetness and trademark rich, creamy head. A fitting homage to our Grandfather’s apprenticeship at the Duke of Baden’s brewery in Germany’s Black Forest region.

A bit watery for a dark beer. Does seem to taste better as it warms up. If the brew were a bit chewier,it would rate much better. Still ll in all better than the mass produced swill.

Nice sweet chocolate-malt aroma; good looking brew with a reasonably thick and stable head. Flavor is caramel and slight roasted grain; body way too thin though which makes the end sharpness a little much (it shouldn’t be). Average for the brewer.

A very nice take on the German black. It lacks the end sharpness that is critical to the best of style but is full flavored and drinks well.

tasty dark lager. with a good roasted malt taste. little on the sweet side. main negative about this is that it lacks body and is too watery

UPDATED: MAR 12, 2005 Bottle: Ruby with a nice tan head, sweet malts in the aroma, light sourness in the taste, starts and ends slightly sweet. Sourness dies down a bit as it warms.

Rather weak black beer. Very watery, slight chocolate and caramel flavors. Boring. I couldn’t wait to move on to the next beer.

A nice beer -- probably Saranac’s best. This does the best to balance what I call the ’saranac taste’ with a body to match it. It’s worth a shot if you’ve tried other Saranac offerings and have wanted just a *little* bit more.

Yeast, chocolate, and caramel nose, hinting at the hops that, along with yeast, dominate the flavor. Masked caramel maltiness had me straining to extract as much flavor as possible. But alas, my effort was fruitless. Watery and rather boring, this is disappointing to say the least.

Thoroughly enjoyable. Perhaps Saranac’s best effort.
