3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
UPDATED: MAR 2, 2003 A very nice bavarian brew. Nice and dark, the color did resemble a black forest. This one definetely needs to be enjoyed with a nice big slice of chocolate cake.

Hmm... the description says it has a creamy head, but when I poured it, mine was without one. That would have added a point to my appearance rating. All in all a good dark beer, smooth body without being bitter like a lot of dark beers tend to be. Good malt/hop balance. I’d get it again.

Too dark for my liking. Goes great with a big meal, though.

I thought I would not like this, but was surprised with the smoothness and decent aftertaste.

Nice color, but not malty enough for my taste. Caramel was very subtle.

I thought it was ok. Would drink again but wouldn’t go out of my way to get it.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
UPDATED: FEB 8, 2004 Deep Dark Red. Nice creamy head. A sweet malt and caramelly nose. A forever caramelly palate with hints of chocolate malt Finish lingers a bit. Good everyday beer because it is very drinkable and not heavy. This holds a special place in my heart because it is one of my first transitional beers. Saranac's best IMHO.

2.7 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
A bit watery for a dark beer. Does seem to taste better as it warms up. If the brew were a bit chewier,it would rate much better. Still ll in all better than the mass produced swill.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Nice sweet chocolate-malt aroma; good looking brew with a reasonably thick and stable head. Flavor is caramel and slight roasted grain; body way too thin though which makes the end sharpness a little much (it shouldn’t be). Average for the brewer.
