3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
UPDATED: NOV 3, 2011 Bottle. Poured very dark muddy brown with a small (less than 1 finger) light brown foamy head that was fully diminishing and had poor lacing.
The aroma was that of a roasted bread malt, a mild resin hop and a mild sweet yeast with notes of coffee, chocolate, molasses and a hint of dark fruit.
The taste was malty and mildly sweet with a note of chocolate in the beginning then became slightly bitter with a note of dark roasted coffee and a touch of dark fruit at the end. The flavor was left to linger an average duration on the taste buds.
Mouthfeel was just a tad beyond medium in body and rather creamy in texture with a flat carbonation.
Overall a smooth easy to drink brew that was quite flavorful and left and very satisfying aftertaste that lingered on the taste buds, but not for to long.

12/12/2009. From bottle. One of my favorite Saranac beers. Dark roasted malt with light hops and fruit. Caramel flavors with malty notes and a bitter finish.

Thick lasting creamy head and a mild malty aroma, I like it. Perhaps a bit too carbonated but that’s being fussy. A pretty decent beer.

3 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Opaque dark brown beer with a medium foamy tan head that subsides into a thin film. Light nose of sweet malt, candied nuts, and a little burnt caramel. Flavor has a touch of roast with an underlying nutty sweetness followed by a bit of punchy hops. Medium-bodied with perky effervescence, this is a relatively mild beer that belies its rich color. Pretty good, but could have more flavor.

From a bottle. Dark brownish red pour, no much head. Very sweet aroma, Caramel and roast, thin mouthfeel, some feint coffee notes ... Not my thing.

Not a bad schwarzbier, especially from Saranac. Has a nice roastiness and for once, the Saranac wateriness works in this beers favor.

3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
12oz bottle. This is one of the first few beers I really liked. I imagine it has changed considerably in ingredient quality and character in the decade since then...but maybe I’m mistaken. Deepish brown-amber body. Thin but steady beige head. Kind of weak on the chocolate malt, you almost get amber tones. I used to really enjoy this beer, but it just a medium bodied mediocrity these days.

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
6/24/2011: Saranac Black Forest (Bavarian Style Black Beer)... Aroma: Caramel notes, bread crust, earthy hops evident. Appearance: Beautiful auburn (red-brown) color with a motled dark beige head that slowly collapses. Flavor: European maltiness with a good balance between some dark maple syrup sweetness and a mild spicy and earthy hop flavor and bitterness; dry Pils-like quality with more malty sweetness and caramel notes behind it. Palate: Medium-bodied; smooth mellow; nice weight in the mouth; almost creamy texture. Overall: Pleasantly palatable beer with some sessionability to it.
12 fl. oz. bottle from Kroger in Harrison, Ohio. Rating #843 for this beer.
