3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
It has a deep dark crimson body with a tall foamy head. The head is tan in color and hangs on well, leaving lots of splotchy lacing on the glass. The aroma is very modest with only light hints of roasted barley malt and some herbal/mineral like hops. Up front the flavor has nice mellow roasted and dark bready maltiness. It quickly thins out and gets quit watery in the middle. Hop flavor steps up in and adds herbal and mineral like notes with a somewhat metallic edge to the finish. This finish seems to linger just a little too long. It has a medium body that seems to thin out towards the finish and carbonation is mellow giving it a smooth overall texture. Overall I would say that Saranac’s Black Lager is very drinkable but there Black Forest is a much better interpretation of a German Schwarzbier.

3.2 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
Found the notes on this.
I poured this into a pilsener glass.
The appearance was a fine dark brown to black color with a quarter finger of white to off white foamy head that quickly died and left some stringy lacing that slid into the beer.
The smell had some dark roasted malts sweetly intermingling with a light dark fruitiness.
The taste was combined between the malts and the fruits to make it fairly sweet and roasty.
On the palate, it sat about a light to medium in the body and had a decent sessionable aspect about it. The carbonation was good for the style and for me as there really wasn’t anything wrong with it.
Overall, way to go Saranac/FX Matt Brewing Company. Everything’s on par for this beer to be a pretty good standard. I could see myself having this again if I lived in their distro.

2.7 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 12/20
Really thought this one falls short. Aroma is near absent. Some rosasted flavors with some lingering sweetness. Biggest problems is that it is too light and watery. Not much to be happy about. The malt presence should be strong even in a lager. The minimal roasted characteristics that exist are dominated by caramel sweet malt. Not for me.

From someone who usually avoids black brews, this was a surprise. Very nice on a cold winter day while the sun is setting early.

3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
355 ml bottle in New York. Pours a dark brown colour with frothy off-white head that stays a while and has great foamy lace. Malty nose of caramel, chocolate and roasted one with hints of yeast. Also malty taste of roasted malts and cherries. All of this pretty mild. A decent schwarzbier but a tad too mild overall. Better than most of thier beers.

Poured from bottle. Lager, gas, burnt malt aroma. Not black, but a very dark mahogany. Roasted malt, a bit of hops, notes of honey and molasses. Dry feel as it should be. Easy to drink. A nice brew.
