COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
In the dusk of winter, when you come in from the cold, grab a Saranac Black Lager to warm up by the fire! This black, German style Schwarzbier has a full body and dark chocolaty flavor. Look for hints of coffee and waves of maltiness that will make you warm and "roasty".

From someone who usually avoids black brews, this was a surprise. Very nice on a cold winter day while the sun is setting early.

Pours dark brown, with cream colored head. Malty, caramel, and maybe chocolate. Light bitterness. Average/soft carbonation and a slighty creamy texture. Long finish with malty aftertaste.

355 ml bottle in New York. Pours a dark brown colour with frothy off-white head that stays a while and has great foamy lace. Malty nose of caramel, chocolate and roasted one with hints of yeast. Also malty taste of roasted malts and cherries. All of this pretty mild. A decent schwarzbier but a tad too mild overall. Better than most of thier beers.

Poured from bottle. Lager, gas, burnt malt aroma. Not black, but a very dark mahogany. Roasted malt, a bit of hops, notes of honey and molasses. Dry feel as it should be. Easy to drink. A nice brew.

Bottle from the Saranac hook up, beastiefan2k. Pours a dark brown color with a medium white head. The aroma is sweet roasted caramel. A nice quaffable flavor; caramel, toasted malts, light chocolate and nuts. Very enjoyable on a hot night.

12 oz. bottle from a winter Saranac mixed pack from A-1 Liquor in Indianapolis. Pours a cloudy dark brown color with a two finger thick beige head. Notes of roasted malts, chocolate, dirt, dust, cola, coffee, and nuts. Some earthy hops. Medium-bodied, with average carbonation and a dry, toasty mouthfeel.

12oz bottle. Pours is a clear dark brown color. The beer has a hint of chocolate and caramel mixed in the traditional Saranac mineral and metallic character. The caramel comes through in the finish very nicely. This is a very decent Schwarz, Saranac does a decent job with dark lagers.

A decent lager procured as part of the winter 09 mix pack. Dark blackish brownish pour with off-tan head and nose of dark malt, cacao, some hops, and a smooth crisp finish. I’d drink this again, and this is a decent lager, and well above most pale lagers.

Appearance: Pours out a dusty, dark brown body with a two inch, light khaki-colored head. Smell: 1-2 combo of roast and toast with complimentary supporting notes of chocolate of the darker variety, cola nuts, and dark fruits. Roastiness in the aroma deepens a bit as it warms. Taste: Toasted pumpernickel bread liberally dipped into chilled, roasty coffee. Touches of bittersweet chocolate, dark fruits, and charred nuts. Light sweetness overall. Hops provide ample bitterness and a very slight herbaceous hint. Drying, roasty finish. Mouthfeel: Medium-light body. Moderate carbonation. Drinkability: A very acceptable Schwarzbier; balanced and easy to down.
