rampmaster (162), Alden, New York, USA Apr 29, 2008 The brown ale forms a thick light tan head that sits on top of a clear dark amber brew. The head makes nice lacing as it sides down the sides of the glass. The aroma is full of sweet malts. On the tongue, caramel and maple sweet malts give way to bitter dark chocolate and coffee notes. The palate is medium bodied and smooth with average carbonation. Saranacs Brown Ale is well balanced and very drinkable. nearbeer (1317), Knoxville, Tennessee, USA Mar 20, 2008 12 oz. Red-brown and translucent with a four-finger crunchy head. Aroma is spicy herbs in chocolate caramel, molasses, and brown sugar. Big malty flavors begin with caramel, spicy molasses and marshmallow, then turns more balanced with toasted nut, peppery apple and molasses, and finally finishes with a flourish of drying resin and bitter herb hops. Light-medium body has a slight tingle and finishes a little dry. Lots of flavors in this great American Brown. beerbomb (172), New Jersey, USA Oct 28, 2006 Aroma is excellent - tightly packed with fruity, floral hops with a sweet malt background. Flavor is exceptional-I am actually blown away by this offering from Saranac. Intense fruity, spicy, flowery, woody hop flavor with an almost gingery undertone with some sweet coffee-like malt balance. Only criticism is that the flavor doesnt linger very long beyond the hop bitterness. Although, this is in comparison to my hoppy favorites-names i never thought Saranac would compete with. Totally not what I expected from a brown ale-could pass as an IPA--still, the balance works for me very well. I hope they make this available on its own. stison42 (317), Blacksburg, Virginia, USA Dec 30, 2006 Updated: Jan 22, 2007Brown. Strong punch of chocolate but still has a slight hoppiness. That sounds strange now that I write it. Airlifter (104), Kansas City, Kansas, USA Mar 11, 2007 Nice dark, caramel color. Medium off-white head. Hoppy aroma--a lot of grapefruit. Well carbonated. Taste is a nice combination of hops and burnt chocolate. Smooth finish, with little lasting aftertaste.
