arventresca (170), Greenville, North Carolina, USA Jun 6, 2008 Bottle. Pours dark brown with a thick creamy head that doesn’t last long. Smooth beer, but lacks in taste compared to other browns I’ve had. Not bad, but better are out there.
fidelis83 (50), Clinton, Iowa, USA Oct 2, 2008 Pours...brown, with a light tan head that leaves some lacing. Aroma is carmel malts a little hot cocoa and a hint of sweet potato. Flavor is faintly chocolate and bitter sweet at first then more chocolate, tobacco, and a very faint nutty flavor. Finish slowly fades to a nice bitter hops with more of that nutty flavor and a hint of alcohol. Feels pretty slick despit its sweetness. A little lighter than most brown ales I’ve had but a little less heavy as a tradeoff. gotohelunc (385), Chapel Hill, North Carolina, USA Sep 28, 2008 Bottle. Very dark maroon, not even a hint of sediment. Smells like raw malt, just like it does as it’s going into the brewpot. Sharp mouthfeel as it hits the tongue followed by a sweet, malty flavor. Finishes a little sour. Another solid, though unremarkable beer made by Saranac, that comes across like something I, as a beginning homebrewer, would be satisfied putting out. kevin62 (251), New Jersey, USA Sep 22, 2008 Poured from a 12oz bottle from a sampler pak.this brew poured a light brown-hance the term brown ale-with a large tan head.Aromas were of chocolate and caramel malt. The taste was a bit on the watery side with hints of caramel, light hops and malt.An ok beer in a pinch. 502Flavors (267), Louisville, Kentucky, USA Sep 19, 2008 12 oz bottle into shaker. Looks nice - clear dark amber body with a good dorty white head that holds pretty well and leaves some respectable lace. Aroma is faint but pleasant - a bit like a nutty pale lager aroma with some faint pine hops. Flavor is pretty one dimensional but pretty solid. Much more malt character on flavor than aroma - nutty with some caramel notes and a very trace amount of hop bitterness coupled with a bit of a funky tangy roasted malt flavor on the finish. Alcohol is hidden well. medium to light body. Overall: best saranac I have had. Simple and solid. Derek881 (343), Frederick, Maryland, USA Sep 12, 2008 Poured into a pint glass from the bottle to drink. Somewhat muted aroma of chocolate and caramel malt, with a bit of grainy hops and touch of yeast. Rich, slightly cloudy, brown color with a slight copper tint. Smaller off-white, foamy head with short retention. The taste is mostly sour and bitter, only a slight chocolately sweetness, and a bit harsh. Watery, dryish body with a rougher finish and feel on the palate. Had hoped for more from this beer, but not too bad.
