3.4 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
A nice beer - nice dark color, not much of a head, nice sweet caramel aroma. Just the right amount of sweet to hops balance as there is a good rich hops flavor and finish. Not too much however. You are left with a sweet finish in your mouth - delicious. Would just have liked a better, chewier head.

eugh. so very very sweet. i could smell the caramel from across the room. dark dark brown with white foam. flavor was completely unbalanced; all i tasted was the overpowering sweetness of caramel, with a very strange aftertaste. medium body. rarely can i not finish a beer, but i can't even drink half a glass of this.

Woe unto those that sample this vile elixir, which doth look, smell and taste as if someone hath spewed caramel syrup from his gullet, into a glass of stagnant pond water. Woe, I say! For not even the almighty himself can cleanse this putrid taste from my tongue!

2.6 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20
UPDATED: NOV 25, 2007 I give Saranac some credit for trying to be creative, but the beer is not very tasty. The strong caramel aroma and flavor is too over-powering. The flavor is somewhat metallic, and the caramel just lingers way too long. This beer is nothing like a porter. Even the color is too dark amber to look like a porter. re-rate 11/07: The aroma is still heavily buttery and filled with caramel - which does put me off to the beer still. The flavor is better than the last time I had it, I suppose: a tad roasty, buttery - slightly earthy. Itís not as bad as I remember it being.

1.3 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 2/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 2/20
This is one of the most disgusting beer that I have ever had. It has a slimy palate, and a fairly average head. Its taste is sickenly sweet. This is not an easy-to-drink beer in any sense of the term.

3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 12/20
Smells very sweet, very dark brown colour...but not black. Nice taste, sampled with a chocolate, but the taste from the food added nothing to the beer, and the flavour was majorly lacking.

3.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20
This is not one of my favorites from saranac. The taste is just too sugary and the mouthfeel is too thin. The arome is pretty good, though, and it looks tasty.

Itís too bad this beer is only included in their seasonal package or at the brewery.

2.1 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 7/20
With a fluffy white head and deep amber-brown color, Saranac Caramel Porter only looks delicious. Aroma of carmalized sugar. Sweet but not at all syrupy. In fact, itís quite watery. So light in flavor Iíd never guess itís a porter.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
UPDATED: APR 13, 2004 2001: Have to agree on the 'unique' wording that many of you have used. Wow, is this sweet and caramelly! The nose is truly powerful, appearance is as nice as any Porter's, and the flavor is a knockout. But, as the last rater complains, unbalanced and with a somewhat strange finish. I love sweet beers, so am rating this higher than most, but I would only recommend to the adventurous and sugar-lovers.
2002: Head a little less impressive, balance a little better this year; more counteracting coffee bitterness/robustness to keep the caramel from overwhelming. Seems a little less impressive than last year, but still far and away the brewer's best IMHO.
