I think this is one of Saranac’s better brews. The caramel is very pronounced, and seems to hide a lot of the underlying flavors. Very much a dessert beer. Probably great for cooking with steaks and burgers.

Tan head slightly diminishing. Chestnut hue. Nots of toffee, caramel, slight sweet alcohol nose. Not much to the body here, but its interesting. Light bodied. Tons of caramel, almost too much. Decent and sweet, good with creme brulee.

Sweet caramel with a touch of brown sugar on the nose. Very light in color for a porter. Thin and watery, pasteurization is very evident. Not worth trying.

If this makes any sense at all I’ll consider myself lucky. I love porters which typically have a roasty, caramelly flavor but this was just too much. Almost like drinking caramel syrup sundae topping, just too much for me.

A very nice porter. Nice hints of carmel smooth out the taste of this good beer. A nice variant into the Porter realm. Definitely a beer for all to experience.

BEST damn beer out there! Such a unique taste. I never expected to have a beer that tastes like this. A slight popcorn-y taste after the beer gets a little older. Drove all the way to Utica, NY from Philadelphia with my girlfriend to get a case of this. Definately worth a try for any level of beer drinker.

UPDATED: JUL 7, 2003 After tasting 30 or more porters, this one's my all-time favorite. I make no pretense that it is 'balanced' - it's not. The caramel is overwhelming. But it's the one I like to drink most. Experts be damned. Oh, by the way, they actually add real caramel to this beer.

4.2 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
UPDATED: MAY 9, 2008 Bottle... This beer rocks!... A sparkling clear, dark mohogany hue. Medium-sized, frothy, khaki-colored head. Mostly, but not fully diminishing. Decent lacework.
The aroma is of a Cadbury’s Caramello bar. Also, butterscotch and English toffee. Very malty and terrific.
Extremely well-balanced beer. Malty with flavorful blasts of caramel, milk chocolate, and a whisper of buttermilk up front. Lightly pungent and lightly bitter hops balance things out nicely on the backside... preventing any annoying or cloying sweetness.
Medium-bodied with a creamy mouthfeel and lively carbonation. Short, astringent, lightly bitter finish. Excellent brew. Saranac brews a lot of beers and seems to be a very hit or miss brewing company. This beer is a major MaltHead HIT!
