Saranac Caramel Porter is a robust, flavorful porter reminiscent of a by-gone era. True to brewing tradition, we've used dark caramel malt as well as Fuggles & East Kent Goldings hops for a smooth, yet slightly bitter, roasted flavor. Look for hints of real caramel used in brewing this delicious brew. Enjoy.

12oz bottle. Clear red-orange color, thin light brown head. Very little lace. Great caramel aroma, tastes exactly like a tootsie roll. Itís not the most refined thing out there, but I like it. Carbonation a bit pronounced. Light sweet taste.

You know those Wertherís Original caramel candies that old people like? Imagine that, then imagine all the good elements were removed, and all the bad elements were accentuated. Then imagine it was mixed with the worst possible toffey type candy you ever got in your Halloween bag as a kid. Finally, imagine it was somehow boiled down into liquid form and mixed with a very tepid nearly flavorless porter. Thatís about what this beer tastes with. Currently my lowest rated beer on this site. I actually said "This tastes like somebody put actual toffee in the beer instead of malt that is described as having toffee notes by tasters". Then I read the label -- I was close -- they actually dumped caramel into the vats (Not caramel malt, though it claims to have some of that, too, caramel as in the candy). Sickeningly sweet and nearly gag inducing. I did manage to finish the beer, but I didnít enjoy it. I doubt Iíll buy Saranacís fall mix pack again this year -- solely because I want to avoid this beer. What will I do with the other one (two came in the pack)? Maybe try putting it in the freezer and drinking straight out of the bottle at some point, but Iím going to have to psyche myself into ever picking the thing up in the first place.

(bottle 10/25/10). Dark brown color, with light cloudiness. Medium off white head. Strong caramel/toffee aroma. Moderate caramel/toffee flavor, with light toast/roasted malt. Avg duration. Lasting sweet finish. Slick texture. Moderate carbonation. Fair lacing.

Bottle... Poured black with an off-white head. Aroma had some diacetyl. I think the diacetyl was evident in he flavor but masked but malt sweetness to mimic burnt buttery sugars, creme, and caramel. Mild carbonation with a vanilla, sweet creme finish. Hardly any roast or bitterness.

Brown-red, puffy light tan head. Aroma is very sweet caramel candies, some roast and light chocolate malt. Taste is different type of caramel sweetness, odd and not what the aroma promised. Very sweet, would be difficult to do more than one of these.

Pours a moderate caramel-copper color and really doesnít have any sort of head at all. Itís a bit murky and there isnít any real lacing. The nose is actually quite nice with some very mild chocolate plus a good dose of toffee and caramel, leaning toward the former. The taste is a mess with the toffee really taking over and it tastes just like liquid candies. Feel is a bit too sweet and moderately cloying. Does not drink well and is just a bit too much of a novelty. Serving type: bottle Reviewed on: 11-13-2010

Poured from 12oz bottle. Pours dark brown with beige/tan head. Aroma is roasted malts and some caramel. Taste follows the nose, but with very little sweetness. Not bad, not great.

Has a peculiar (not necessarily in a bad way) taste and smell....almost kind of sour, like a lambic. You can definitely taste the sweetness from the caramel as well. Some hoppiness. Dark brown in color, with a medium-sized caramel-colored head.

A - Pours a deep brown color with a hint of red and a finger of brownish head. The head fades fairly quickly to a think layer and leaves behind a little bit of lacing. S - Aroma is mostly of carmel. Overall extremely sweet. Just a little touch of roasted smell mixed in. Not overly strong. T - Starts off with a building carmel taste. Fairly sweet. It eventually gets extremely sweet with just a touch chocolate and roasted malt mixed in. Finish is fairly sweet with a lot of carmel with just a hint of bitterness. Overall a bit too sweet, bordering on cloyingly sweet. M - Fairly light bodied and low carbonation. Feels a touch watery. The finish is a bit dry. Overall, feels like it is lacking something here. D - Fairly drinkable, but overall far too sweet. The mouthfeel and aroma both feel like they are they are too light and lacking something. Much more of a dessert beer than anything else, and still a too sweet.

Pretty good beer right here. Taste is pretty strong on the caramel and malts, a little bitter as well, and not as sweet as it probably could be. Pretty solid beer, very drinkable.
