Saranac Caramel Porter is a robust, flavorful porter reminiscent of a by-gone era. True to brewing tradition, we've used dark caramel malt as well as Fuggles & East Kent Goldings hops for a smooth, yet slightly bitter, roasted flavor. Look for hints of real caramel used in brewing this delicious brew. Enjoy.

UPDATED: NOV 21, 2012 Had from a winter variety case.. I actually think that I like sweet beers but I did not enjoy this one that much... [One of the first craft beers I ever tried - so to be fair, I really need to try this one again along with a few other saranacs.] 4.5 years later and this beer STILL BLOWS. Nowhere near the porter style. Just overly sweet caramel flavoring. Ultra thin bodied. Dear god. C’mon saranac.

Bottle and served in standard pint glass: Pours a clean medium brown with reddish highlights topped by a small frothy tan head and some lace. The aroma is heavy caramel, butterscotch and brown sugar along with a very faint vapour of aromatic hops and apple esters. The taste is much like the nose with overtly strong sweet malt character along with major diacetyl tones. A bit nutty and toasty but any bitterness is covered up by the full frontal sweetness. I like Fuggles and EKG hops but they are nowhere to be front sadly. The mouth feel is lively and thin. Ugh, I will pass...

Forte carbonisation. Arrière goût de beurre. (Rating #90)

Call me a a sucker - but I was done in by the caramel aroma. Flavor did not disapoint either. Nice deep, dark appearance, thinly dissipating with a little lacing head. Overall, not bad - but too sweet for a porter. Strong finish - overall a good effort by Saranac.

Pours brown with a tan head. Smells of chocolate and grass. Taste is of cocoa and some bitter hops.

Bottle (12oz). Shared with blankboy, GregClow and tupalev. Clear ruby-copper with no head. Sweet, thin aroma of caramel and butterscotch - and MORE caramel, quite artificial - I don’t really smell hops, malt or anything else. Tastes the same, but the fake caramel adds an unpleasant chemical tang ... it is fairly roasty, I guess. Mouthfeel is watery, syrupy and flat - I liked this not at all, too thin and fake.

Bottle: Dark crimson with a firm 1/4 inch head. Real sugary aroma, like caramel candy corns from Halloween. Similar essence in the flavors ... good thing I skipped trick or treating this year. This is definitely for the sweet tooths.

Dark red color. Smells kind of like a sweet caramel beer, and I can taste a coffee/butterscotch flavor, really over the top though.

Bottle: No mistake about that aroma, definitely all caramel and nothing else. Pours a dark reddish-brown with slight transparency when held to the light. Decent off-white head that diminishes quickly. Flavor is all caramel with a little butteriness and extremely light hops in the finish. I like this, but I don’t think I could drink a lot of it without getting sick of it. Something that would be enjoyable every now and then. The rating for this beer really comes down to how much you like caramel.

Bottle. Pours dark brown with a medium tan head. Aroma of caramel, butterscotch and subtle chocolate. Malty flavor with sweet caramel and a bit of chocolate before a semi-bitter roasty finish.
