Saranac Caramel Porter is a robust, flavorful porter reminiscent of a by-gone era. True to brewing tradition, we've used dark caramel malt as well as Fuggles & East Kent Goldings hops for a smooth, yet slightly bitter, roasted flavor. Look for hints of real caramel used in brewing this delicious brew. Enjoy.

Bottle. Appearance: Dark ruby brown with light beige head. Aroma: Very strong caramel, some hops in the background. Palate: Medium. Flavor: Roasted caramel malts, light hops. Overall: Not a bad beer, but the caramel is a little to overwhelming for my taste. I bet it would be awesome to drink with a slice or apple pie.

Bottle and served in standard pint glass: Pours a clean medium brown with reddish highlights topped by a small frothy tan head and some lace. The aroma is heavy caramel, butterscotch and brown sugar along with a very faint vapour of aromatic hops and apple esters. The taste is much like the nose with overtly strong sweet malt character along with major diacetyl tones. A bit nutty and toasty but any bitterness is covered up by the full frontal sweetness. I like Fuggles and EKG hops but they are nowhere to be front sadly. The mouth feel is lively and thin. Ugh, I will pass...

UPDATED: FEB 25, 2009 Bottle. Pours a dark brown with a decent beige head. The aroma is a light caramel and malt. The caramel flavor really jumps out at you. There is also some hops and a burnt malt/ coffee flavors. A good easygoing drink. Not too bad at all. Thin and light, but good. Re-rate: had a 2 year old bottle thanks to beastiefan2k. A bit more of roasted goodness than I noted originally. The burnt caramel and roasted malts go well together. Nice.

Forte carbonisation. Arrière goût de beurre. (Rating #90)

Bottle: Dark crimson with a firm 1/4 inch head. Real sugary aroma, like caramel candy corns from Halloween. Similar essence in the flavors ... good thing I skipped trick or treating this year. This is definitely for the sweet tooths.

Call me a a sucker - but I was done in by the caramel aroma. Flavor did not disapoint either. Nice deep, dark appearance, thinly dissipating with a little lacing head. Overall, not bad - but too sweet for a porter. Strong finish - overall a good effort by Saranac.

Poured a deep reddish, brown color with a small tan head that quickly diminished and left sparce lacing. Buttery, sweet roasty, and caramel malts in the aroma. Taste is dominated by caramel and butter. Rather weak after the initial taste, though as it reaches room temperature it becomes more flavorful.. Not a bad porter at all though.

UPDATED: NOV 21, 2012 Had from a winter variety case.. I actually think that I like sweet beers but I did not enjoy this one that much... [One of the first craft beers I ever tried - so to be fair, I really need to try this one again along with a few other saranacs.] 4.5 years later and this beer STILL BLOWS. Nowhere near the porter style. Just overly sweet caramel flavoring. Ultra thin bodied. Dear god. C’mon saranac.

Dark reddish-brown and fizzy with no head. Intense sweet aroma is hilarious. Margarine smeared on raisin bread. Supermarket candy caramels. Decent carbonation levels. Doesn’t taste all that bad. Has lots of toasted cake-type flavors, cookie, molasses but is light. Decent malty character with icing sugars, some gingerbread. Really not that bad in spite of the aromas. I’m thinking Twix Bar beer.
