4.1 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
dessert brown with a creamy delicious looking head...aroma was super sweet carmel, no if, ands, or butts about it..well maybe a few butts...BIG ONES..anyway..
there’s no justification on giving this a bad rating just because its unique..its damn tasty and a finely made beer...
Carmel onslaught...I actually expected sweeter though from reading all the ratings..THere’s actually a good beer under that carmel..I can taste it..The ending needs a little work though..

Clear deep caramel color (hey what did you expect?). The aroma is an almost overwhelming wallop of sweet candy caramel. It smells almost exactly like a box of caramel candies. The flavor is an interesting mix of sweet caramel and bitter hops. This one really surprises me. Based on the aroma I thought I would hate it, however it is really quite pleasing. The body is medium with a dry finish. For me this is Saranac's best brew. A real surpsise.

I really enjoyed this Caramel Porter. Like others, I too found it a little watery, but the overall impression I got was that it was a carefully constructed beer designed to bring the taste of caramel to the forefront of a solid dark beer. The slight bitterness rounds out the beer very nicely. I didn’t come in with any expectations on this one and I was nicely surprised.

In the Saranac "12 Classic Styles" 12-pack. Very dark brown with a large fluffy beaige/tan head. Looks nice. Aroma is outstanding: SWEET caramels, vanilla, and other aromas. Good for someone who enjoys that type of thing, bad for someone who doesn’t, as this aroma is quite strong. Flavor is porterlike, for sure, with heavy accents on caramel candy. Too tasty to be this cheap.

This is a great beer. Just enough caramel, nixed with the fine aspects of a good porter. You can’t drink many but the one you do have is going to be great!

I really like this porter. Have had it since day one when it come out (15 miles from the brewery =). It is a strong Caramel nose and taste, so if you don’t care for Caramel, you are not gonna be happy with this brew

This beer is just about pure caramel. I love it! Black pour. Nose and taste is overpowering caramel. Some light chocolate malts. Rated 12/20/2000

Hmmmm.... a beer made by a brewery notorious for ’watered down’ and ’lowly rated’ beers... guess I should just arbitrarily write this one off like many of my fellow ratebeerians. WELL SCREW THAT!!! I’m going against the grain on this one - This beer is GREAT! I’ll admit, I’d personally like a little more complexity in the flavor department, but the aroma is just something amazing. First off, this thing pours a gorgeous mahogany with garnet highlights and a dense dark khaki head. Great full and rich toffee and caramel notes walk the line that is reminiscent of Southern TIer’s Creme Brule (but nothing is quite THAT good...). The flavor follows through with the expected sweetness of the caramel, but is surprisingly balanced with the earthy hop character, and finishes with an almost burnt/toasted note. Maybe just a slight bit thin on the palate, but certainly not watery - in fact, I think any more full bodied, and it would detract from the quaffability of this fine beverage. Lastly, at a mere $7 per six-pack, this is an extremely affordable brew! And with fairly large distribution channels, this one can serve as a perfect ’gateway’ beer for many a non-craft drinker. But, while possibly lacking tons of nuances or complexity, it still has solid character that any self-professed beer ’snob’ should be able to appreciate. Thank you, Saranac, for providing us with an affordable, quality beverage, that we can share and enjoy with our less beer-educated neighbors. Thank you.

UPDATED: FEB 5, 2014 Despite other reviews, I found this to be one of my favorite "drinkable" beers of the season. Smells like caramel. Taste like caremel. Whether or not the smell and/or taste are artificial, I don’t care. Guess I’m "naive". If you love caramel you will love this beer.
