3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 11/20
It is OK. The nose is very minimal of hops and the taste is watery and bland. nothing too great in there, but for the price I can see why. Donít get me wrong, it is not a horrible beer in a mix 12, but not something I would go grab a full 6er of.

3.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
Bottle. Pours a pale amber with a large frothy white head. Decent head retention. Aroma of citrus, herbal, floral hops with a bit of spice and pale malts. The taste is pale malts, citrus and herbal hops. Medium bodied. OK, but itís no Legacy.

2.6 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 10/20
Bottle. Nose is loaded with straight-up, canít be told otherwise, Italian grandma Spaghetti sauce, at least right out of the bottle. Pours a clear copper leaning toward orange and supports a soapy beige head. In the glass, more of the same aromatics but subdued, allows some light citrus to poke out, and thin malt. Taste very dry and medium-bitter with very strong crisp carbonation, heavy and slightly minerally full body, leaving chalk and aluminum in the aftertaste. Actually, thatís not necessarily a terrible thing (think aggressive North German Pilsner), but in the absence of clear cleanliness, Iím not sure itís planned. Still, after a string of encouraging successes from Saranac/Matt, Iím going to have to thumb this one down.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Another bottle from Jacob. Thanks!
It looks a bit lighter than the Pale Ale but what I said aboot the foam and lacing applies to this beer as well.
Kind of a citrusy hop nose that leans more towards a lemon vs grapefruit nose. No, more than kind of. Itís all Iím getting after many whiffs. Naught wrong with that imho.
The taste follows to a T what I just said aboot the smell. Lemon but also a very blood orange like flavour; I know if thatís what they intended, they would have said that on the label but being a fan of the Moro, I stand by my assertion. Not much of a malt presence that I can taste but the hops are doing well enough for my liking.
Similar mouthfeel to the Pale..light side of medium bodied, lively carbonation.
Another brew that I consider a solid entry from Matt Brewing.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
I poured a 12oz bottle into the official Saranac shaker glass. It has a best before date of 6/30/14 and cost $1.83 ($0.15 per ounce).
Appearance: Dark gold/amber hue with faint copper. Mostly clear with some visible carbonation. Pours to an average size, white, foamy head which laces and retains rather well.
Smell: Combination of light herbal notes and citrus pith.
Taste: I think Saranac Forbidden IPA can be summed up in five words: rather generic, but not bad. This brewery has been experimenting with their beers recently, but they also try to make recipes that have broad appeal. In the case of this beer itís a recognizable IPA, though it does have a bit of uniqueness to it. But itís not so bold to be appreciated for its originality.
The label describes the beer as being citrusy and having a distinctive fruity flavor. It also mentions that itís brewed with natural flavors. If there is supposed to be some kind of fruit flavoring here Iím not picking up on it at all. Mostly, itís a cross between a New England style herbal/spicy IPA and a West Coast style citrusy IPA. Though both flavors are quite reserved, they do complement each other. Not much in the way of malt character, though there almost seems to be some rye present here. No distinctive sweetness, but the hop flavor and bitterness is strong enough to notice and appreciate, but isnít anything the average drinker canít handle.
Drinkability: Saranac Forbidden IPA drinks exactly as it should. With a medium body, crisp mouthfeel and relatively clean finish, itís the kind of IPA youíd expect to come in a mainstream breweryís mainstream mix pack. At 5.2% ABV and 50 IBUs itís quite light for the style, but still works as an IPA. Probably an ideal beer to pair with spicy food, though it works fine as a standalone beverage.

2.9 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
An orange body with a thin white head. Aroma was a mix of citrus and floral hops. Could not sense any malts and at times the floral hops reminder me of talcum powder. Flavor was of bitter hops and citrus and really not much else. A smooth finish.

2.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured a bright orange-amber color with a medium sized soapy-creamy orange-white head that left a bit of lacing. The aroma was bitter pine, fruit and citrus with a hint of caramel. The flavor was bitter, tart and tangy with notes of lemon and pine. Medium length finish. Medium body. Decent.

2.6 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20
Pours gold into a Sam glass. Bright white head with good retention recedes to skim surface. Sour marshmallow and cracker aromas. Sour nasty wet maltbag and vegetal pot liquor.
