0.5 AROMA 1/10 APPEARANCE 1/5 TASTE 1/10 PALATE 1/5 OVERALL 1/20
definite citrus, pine and resin in the nose. pours amber with medium head and okay retention. flavor is piney with some resin and grapefruit in the finish. Caramel malt pokes its head in for a little balance. viscous oily hop palate. Overall a good IPA, not imperial by some standards, but hoppy and enjoyable.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Pours a fairly clear gold dark orange. Creamy rich head. Fruit juicy aroma with orange pineapple, marmalade, some sweet candy caramel bready malt. Has that fruit pie pastry kinda aroma- real nice. Rich chewy malt with some dry toast malts, fruit hop, candy caramel, could be some fruity esters, almost bubblegummy like I get from some of like stone ipa? I believe. Little bit of alcohol, somewhat dry finish but pretty smooth and soft. Pretty nice for a double. this bottle appears to be really fresh. Im not a double fan but this isnít far from a reg ipa that said I probably like it better than a 9-10% they would attempt. Gets a little thin as it warms. nicely drinkable.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Dark gold to copper pour with a soapy to rocky eggshell head that has great retention and leaves nice lacing. Aroma is ripe, sweet citrus, caramel, over ripe strawberry, brown sugar, a hint of pine shoots and candy-like fruity and floral notes. Flavor is caramel, brown sugar, toast, cereal, somewhat woody pine, light bready malt, a little booziness, and a finish of pine, citrus, caramel, and light piney wood. Medium body, chewy entry, medium, blanketing and somewhat sharp carbonation, syrupy, dry finish with a light boozy warmth and moderate hop acid twang. Good stuff overall, mild as far as IIPAs go, but decently balanced and light on flaws.

2.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20
It has a medium orange amber colored body with good clarity and a big white head. The head has good retention and makes some good sticky white lace rings on the glass. The aroma has a grainy alcohol smell that mixes into a very powerful hop bouquet. The hop scent is assertive and brings loads of pine resin, citrus, and some old musty/spicy hop notes to the nose. It has a big, sweet grainy and dark bready malt flavor up front with a touch of caramel and smoke. Also there is a very noticeable syrupy and medical alcohol presence throughout. A big hop presence quickly takes over and offers a muddled and overly complex flavor that also brings heavy bitterness. In the end the finish is a slow fading fight between bitter hops and sweet grainy alcohol. On the tongue it has a big full body with a thick, somewhat slick texture that overpowers the seemingly light carbonation. The bottle notes that there are 10 different malts and 10 different hop varieties used to brew its Imperial IPA. I thick that they may have gone a little overboard here.

This is the same beer as Saranac imperial IPA> So this is one of the better Saranac beers according to the straight ratings. Darker than average clear american pale beer color, reminds me of yuengling original lager. Tea froth top. Sweet floral hop flower aroma. Bitter biting hop taste impact. Syrupy coating hop bitter bite that is really quite irritating. Saranac IPA is on par with this. As a wheat lover I would rate the Saranac witbier way above this. This stuff, is way too difficult too enjoy. Yes, a lingering bitter finish that just will not go away, too medicine for me. Would rate high on this website in a blind test if the king tasters didnít look at the label. Long finish is simply too bitter and offensive, a good IIPA!!! I donít feel or taste that typical Saranac quality here. Will not buy again, as with any DIPA. Almost as offensive as a Bellsís Exp and Lion Stout.

Pours dark straw with off-white head. Nose was resiny hops, tangerine, pale malt. Tasted pale malty, somewhat hot, with a heftier malt and ABV bill that most other Matt brews. I liked the hops and ABV in this, but the malt bill was not quite balanced. Still, not bad.

Bottle from Caponeís. Nice hazy ruby coppery color with 2-finger off-white head. Aroma of bready caramel malt, big hops, some funky fruit notes. Tastes resiny and hoppy, with some funky and black peppery notes and a firm caramel malt base. Pretty thick and complex. Nice.

3.9 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
This is an interesting variation on the style. Almost Barleywine-ish in sweetness the hops have more of an earthy sense that the tangerine-ish sense further in the background. Almost candy-like with a strong caramelized malt nose and, in the taste, there too though far more in the background. I rated it a tad higher than I might have because if youíre looking for a variation on the style. this is it. The mouthfeel is medium, but filled with enough complexity to keep it interesting.

Ratig from 2010: Der Antrunk ist sŁŖlich-malzig, leicht herb, leicht zitronig, was zum Hauptteil neben der penetranten SŁŖe kaum heraus kommt. Insgesamt enttauschend, zu sŁŖ. Es fehlt an an Hopfenaromen! Als Imperial IPA ein schlechtes Bier!
