shp555 (1678), Atlanta, Georgia, USA May 10, 2008 Pours a brown color with a brown head. Aroma is roast, malt, caramel, some chocolate, and some spicy hops. Flavor is malty, chocolate, roast, caramel, and a spicy peppery finish. unclemattie (2370), Georgia, USA May 10, 2008 12oz bottle. Pours dark brown \ black. Aroma of alcohol, licorice, anise, and some roast. Flavor is sour, roast, and lots of alcohol flavor. Not much else for overall character. ATLBeerDog (280), Atlanta, Georgia, USA May 10, 2008 Pours a beautiful brownish/black color that is extremely dark – not much head with average lacing and below average carbonation. The dominate smell is rich malts, coffee and chocolate. First taste is light, sweet, smoky, and bitter - not much body at all. Not very complex as other in this style. arventresca (334), Greenville, North Carolina, USA May 10, 2008 Bottle. Pours black with thick tan head. Very tasty effort from Saranac. Strong beer. Can’t make it a night on the town with this stuff. Ty5592 (1015), Lansdale, Pennsylvania, USA Apr 30, 2008 Draft. Pours black with milk chocolate head. Roasted malt aroma. Thick on the palate with light dark fruit and burt roasted malt flavors. Bitter alcohol finish.
molsonfan9000 (59), geneva, New York, USA Apr 24, 2008 This beers gotten me into trouble a few times. Smell was malty and sweet/smoky. Poured pitch black with a thick head. Flavor was chocolatey and malty, with slight alcohol bite. Mouthfeel was smooth as silk. I really liked this beer, it kicked my ass. wetherel (1565), Encinitas, California, USA Apr 24, 2008 Bonus bottle from tonraner on 3/24/08. Thanks! pours with a big 3 finger head, which almost overflows my pint glass. Initially smell is a little grainy, like hay, and like brewing day. A hint of roastiness escapes the expedition-like dark tan frothy head. The opaque liquid pours thick like molasses. Lots of roast in the taste. Like pouring coffee grinds on my tongue. Lingering bitterness. Dry. A bit ashy. Tolerable, but I’m not a fan of these roasty cigarette butt dry imperial stouts. Imperial stouts are hit or miss with me. Some of them I love (like Darkness, but then who doesn’t love it), some I dislike (Like Peche Mortel). After trying ones I dislike, like this, I get discouraged and want drink IPAs or gueuzez for a while. HighGravity (890), Baltimore, Maryland, USA Apr 18, 2008 This is certainly an ale that can stand up to the beer abuser that is FX Matt. A highly fruit forward stout with a dry bitter finish that is appealing.
