BlueDevil0206 (122), Durham, North Carolina, USA Jun 21, 2005 Bottled. At a wedding that had many Saranac summer samplers. Pours a clear golden yellow with little to no head. Smells slightly sweet and malty with some acetaldehyde and other fruity esters. Flavor is lightly malty and clean with just a tad of an ester profile. Ever so slightly sweet too. Bitterness is minimal though apparent enough for balance. Body is pretty thin and I think it is a bit over carbonated. Decent refreshing beer but far from great.
502Flavors (230), Kentucky, USA Sep 3, 2008 12 oz into pint glass. Crystal clear golden with big white head and visible carbonation (the presence of some lace surprised and pleased me, though it was pretty minimal). Smells like nothing with a very very subtle trace of hops. Tastes like nothing with a hint of nothing. Feels like water on the palate (at least it isn’t overly carbonated!). Overall: I don;t get this style. it is the "ultra light" of all beer styles and leaves no room for flavor as far as I have experienced (though I have only had a few Kolsches). My question is, what is the difference between Kolsch and pale lager. This this is poundable but boring. Dacrza (159), Great Meadows, New Jersey, USA Aug 31, 2008 Golden yellow, generally opaque body with fluffy foamy three-finger head in a Saranac willibecker--looks refreshing... crisp pilsner malts are stongest... little else, as it should be with the style... active, thin palate that vibrates on the tongue... appealingly fresh... fresh, relaxed clean malts--the lightest feel of vanilla and acidity actually compliment the otherwise thin mouthfeel... as for saranac’s summer sampler, this is the top offering, with its clean, pure approximation of the style--which I thought, again, that the appelation kolsch is not available to non-Cologne brewers... Ryan liked this one too, and I can’t really find an issue with its light pilsner effects... dkachur (778), Charlottesville, Virginia, USA Aug 30, 2008 12 oz. bottle. Golden amber pour with a small head. Aroma of straight malt with a honeylike sweetness. Grainy taste with grassy notes and a green-apple like fruitiess. A little watery and thin. nqualls (205), Tennessee, USA Aug 25, 2008 12 ozer poured into a shaker. Poured a gold color with a huge bubbly head that disappeared quickly. Malty aroma with a sweet malty flavor. A very refreshing summer session type beer. I didn’t find anything particularly outstanding about this beer, but enjoyed drinking it. BillWyce (20), Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA Aug 23, 2008 Bottle poured into English pint. Had a
crisp, citrusy aroma. Poured an amber
blonde color with a 1-finger head. Kind
of thin palate...not much to speak of.
Very thin, light flavor of citrus that then
became grassy. Nothing special.
