This robust, flavorful porter is new from Saranac. Look for a smooth, yet slightly roasted-bitter flavor and hints of real maple syrup and a deep brown color

Reviewed from notes. This was poured into a pint glass. The appearance was a nice dark brown color ranging close to black. The head was small and quickly fading barely leaving any lacing. The smell had a large amount of maple up front (gently sweet) overpowering a light robust coffee/chocolate aroma trying to come out. The taste was balanced fairly nicely between the maple and the coffee/chocolate. On the palate, this one sat right at a medium on the body. I would say this was fairly sessionable. The carbonation was fairly subdued. Overall, this was a good maple Porter worthy of coming back again.

Its body has a brownish color with reddish amber highlights. It produced a light beige, two finger thick head. It is a slow fading head that fades down to a just a ring of lacy foam. Lacing on the glass is spotty and slick. There is a definite sweet maple syrup like aroma with a touch of toasted malt. It has a very sweet mix of thin toasted bready maltiness covered with maple flavored corn syrup. I also get some buttery notes as well. This flavor reminds me of a frozen waffle covered in a Log Cabin like breakfast syrup and butter. This one is all about the sweetness as there is only a very slight hint of leafy hops in the middle that tries in vain to add some bitterness. The finish has some maple sweetness and a bit more roasted maltiness fading off the tongue. With all this sweetness it is still fairly light on body and thin in texture. Carbonation is light as well and makes the thin texture somewhat slick. For me this beer is way too sweet. I can not help thinking that I should be putting this on pancakes or something. Drinkability for me is very low, as I couldn’t see drinking any more than one of these at a time.

11/1/2009. Bottle from a sampler box. Poured dark mahogany with a tan head. Roasted malt aromas, dark fruit and spices. Flavors are a little sweet from the syrup, but this is not bad at all.

12oz bottle. Ahh, Saranac, an old love. This seems to be the fraternal twin to the Caramel Porter, one of my first love beers. This is a good stab at basically the same beer. Pours with a slightly thicker white head and a decent lacing. Aroma hits you with a good, yet artificial, caramel and sweet maple sugar, but not too sweet. Flavor has even less sweetness than my nose detects. Porter behind it is unassuming and unoffensive, artificial character is tolerable. Sweet, dark beer, that is all.

Thanks JoeMcPhee. Malt with maple syrup aroma. Deep mahogany colour with a great tan head and lace. Malt, maple syrup goodness. Slight smoked roasted hints. Lovely beer with a great texture.

12 oz. bottle from A-1 Liquor in Indianapolis. Part of a Winter Saranac mixed pack. Pours a cloudy brown color with a small beige head. Holy smokes, the maple syrup notes absolutely explode out of this one, all over the nose and flavor. Also slightly roasted caramel malts, brown sugar, some winter spices, toasted nuts. Light-medium bodied, with a sticky mouthfeel and low carbonation. Man, this is a sweet, sweet beer. Use caution.

Reddish brown, off white cover. Aroma is sweet maple syrup, some like sweet malts, cocoa. Taste is just a shot of maple syrup, thin, fizzy, some cocoa.

Bottle. Pours dark brown, clear, with a gentle, khaki head. Light aroma with notes of roasted malts and caramel. Flavor has mild sweetness, roasty, and definitely some hints of maple syrup. A bit watery, though. I wish it was sweeter. Not bad, though.
