Roasted malt, oats, and a sweet sugary chocolate aroma. A bit fragrant, but only in the right glass. Flavor starts with oats, and ends with almost too sweet chocolate. In between there is a bit of a roasted coffee flavor. Actually it’s pretty tasty, but I’m sure side by side with other oatmeal stouts (Southern Tier comes to mind) this would wince in pain. Medium bodied with maybe a bit too much carbonation. First time I’ve had this beer and considering the cost, is worth the deal. gwpom (250), Akron, New York, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Oct 27, 2007 12 oz bottle from the winter pack. Nice and black, thick appearance, off white head, still a bit of a disappointment. When I think of stout, I think of motor oil, and this isn’t nearly that hefty. Nice flavor, a bit watered down, and an enjoyable beer, but not a top of the line stout. I’ll always like Saranac though for making the effort. biznizness (934), Mooresville, North Carolina, USA
| 2.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 2/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 10/20 | Oct 24, 2007 A little too much light getting through this one, ya know? Not a very good stout, lacking a deep, rich flavor. Drinks more like a coke, I guess. jonwayne4883 (401), Grand Rapids, Michigan, USA
| 2.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 4/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 10/20 | Feb 26, 2007 probably my second favorite from saranac. chocolate and oat flavor goes a long way, only thing this stout needs more of is a darker color. mynameisjonas (206), Grand Rapids, Michigan, USA

| 2.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 2/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Feb 9, 2007 Surprised to read Saranac Oatmeal Stout has "seven hand selected hops". That’s something a Pale Ale or IPA would proclaim on its label. Other than a thin head and body this was an adequate sweet stout. Oatmeal, roasted, caramel malts and bitterness all make their presense known. skorchsoul (36), Pennsylvania, USA
| 2.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 10/20 | Jan 4, 2007 8/12 of the winter variety pack. Pours a deep brown, almost black but can be penetrated by light with a off white head. taste is somewhat bitter but has a hint of chocolate and oatmeal. not bad. | 2.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 4/10 | 2/5 | 8/20 | Nov 27, 2006 Poured a not quite opaque black with a medium tan head. Aroma of cereal and dark malt. There’s something not quite right about the taste. Tastes too weak for the style. Maybe it’s the old 2005 bottle, or I haven’t recovered from the last fruit beer I rated.
