Commercial Description:
Our Saranac Oatmeal Stout is lavishly brewed with a delicate balance of the finest Mid-Western grown oats, seven hand-selected hops and our traditional ale yeast. Look for a sweet, dark chocolate and roasted taste in this full bodied stout. Often described as silky and smooth, this delicious Oatmeal Stout is one to remember.

Bottle (12oz). Shared with blankboy, GregClow and tupalev. Sorry, but this is NOT a stout. Looks like a glass of cola with a small off-white head. This even smells like a cola - light roast nutty malt, stale hops, dry and bitter, sour and vegetal. Taste of sour fruit and very roasty malt - this has a long bitter finish, but is still way too light for a stout. Mouthfeel is harsh and thin and weakly acidic - this is the weakest, blandest, sour dishwater excuse for an "oatmeal stout" I’ve ever tasted.

12 oz bottle. Dark mahogany body under a finger sized light brown head. Aroma of lightly roasted malt and some coffee as well. Slightly sour/lactic burnt malt flavor with a coffee and lightly bitter finish. Mouthfeel is rather thin and unremarkable. Pretty weak effort overall, an Oatmeal Stout with training wheels if you will. Not bad for a regional brewer though.

I am not much of a stout fan, though I tend to prefer the oatmeal varieties over the regular. Saranac however has not done well in this style though. Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured a black color with a very small dark brown head that fades quickly. The aroma is moderate roasty malts. The body is rather thin and watery which is a real disappointment. The flavor is strong roasty malts with moderate floral hops. The beer is quite bitter and rather dry for an oatmeal stout. Too thin and too dry for my taste.

Pours a medium dark brown color with a smal amount of dark manilla head. Aroma is bitter dark chocolate, lactose, expresso, molases, and a slight bit of roasted nuts. Flavor is light, dry and bitter with minimal flavors as were suggested by the aroma. Overall, just so so.

Nice dark pour. Yeasty (more likely oaty) aroma. Good sweet, roasted coffee flavor. Too sweet for my everyday consumption, but enjoyable nonetheless.

Courtesy of Afterexile. <P> The aroma decided to take a nap shortly after I opened the bottle. I THINK I caught a hint of some malts, but you can never be sure. Though she wore no perfume this dame was a looker. Ebony with a beatiful tan head. She had considerably less depth than I’d hoped for. Ohh she was smooth..maybe even what some would consider refined, but there just wasn’t much there other than some feint roast coffee which now makes my woman anaology look pretty flipping silly.

Pours a blackish-ruby with tan head. Sweet aroma with notes of chocolate and coffee.. A little thin for a stout. Good lacing. Dry, bitter finish. Solid brew.
