hophead75 (1945), Boonton, New Jersey, USA Feb 29, 2008 Updated: Mar 1, 2008Just about black in color with a tan head. Aroma is roast, dark fruit, sour malt. Taste is roasty water with lactose and slight sourness. Body is thin. Some chocolate comes out a bit as the beer warms, but still not liking this one at all. ElGaucho56 (386), USA Feb 11, 2008 Pours a near opaque brown with tannish 1/2 inch dissipating creamy head. Nose is musty raisins and something like cooked pasta, a slightly sour grain note I assume comes from the oatmeal. Relatively thin palate, but interesting flavor, starting with burnt toast before moving into a dark sweet fruitiness before cleansing towards a milky coffee finish. Where on earth the 7 varieties of hops go in the boil is beyond me, as there is only a slight minty bitterness in the finish. Mouthfeel is somewhat spritzy, which is strange for the style. Probably the best Saranac beer I’ve tried so far, although very little has put up any competition. rudolf (1734), Buffalo, New York, USA Feb 11, 2008 Nearly black, ruby around the edges, milky tan head. Nose is heavily cocoa, some almost raisony malt, a hint of hops. Flavor is cocoa, sweet nearly burnt malt, some milk. Odd tart grapeyness. Relatively hoppy finish. BEERGUY007 (206), Scotia, New York, USA Feb 9, 2008 12 ounce bottle from the winter box. Pours black, nice color, a little head not much, could have been more. Sweet like it should be but it did’t cloy. Nice and thick mouth feel, not the thickest Ive had but still full which was nice. Not the heaviest Ive had either, I like them more like a meal in a bottle, but this one was good. craftycarl21 (513), South Hero, Vermont, USA Feb 2, 2008 very solid aroma. flavor is tasty, sweet, but the consistency is watery, especially for a stout. decent beer for the money, but not too hot as compared to other stouts. oteyj (716), Canterbury, New Hampshire, USA Feb 2, 2008 Pours dead black with a huge, dark bubbly head. Sibsides into a 2mm covering. Very nice aroma, that hints at sweetness and a large quantity of malt. Flavour is very unique and nicely malted, but suffers greatly due to its thin, almost watery body. Not nearly robust enough to be a great stout, though it could with a richer mouthfeel. aimtofail (6), Connecticut, USA does not count Jan 27, 2008 dark pour with medium-dark head, mild aroma.. very bitter and acidic alcohol taste. tastes of chocolate overwhelmed by bitter hop taste.. this ones ’alright’ bobaidan (358), Farmington, Connecticut, USA Jan 25, 2008 Pours black as expected with a good sized head. Aroma is roast, sweet malt and maybe a touch of bread. Mouth feel is thin for a stout. Flavor has some chocolate, sweetness, and a lot of hop bitterness. There is also a lactic acid sourness, which isn’t really my thing. Drinkable enough, but not great.
