| 2.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 4/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 11/20 | Jan 13, 2008 Came in a 12-pack winter sampler... staunch black body with a soft, creamy brown head--like a milk stout... light notes of soft roasted malt and a dash of chocolate--some hay/grass as well... carbonation indeed--head smooths initial mouthfeel into a fizzy finish... smooth (again) and thin on the toasted promise of aroma and appearance... chocolate, yes, and a bit bitter too... generally light and soft... quickly exhaled out flavor...after having a few memorable stouts this fall, this offering is best as a sampler companion than a six-pack pick-up... | 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Jan 10, 2008 Good brew, A traditional English style oatmeal stout, pours thick and creamy with a great head that lasts, a bit sweet with a moderate hop bite to let you know it’s a stout. Nice roast malt flavor throughout the tasting. Certainly worth the price. ghostbrewer (9), Massachusetts, USA does not count | 2.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 4/5 | 4/10 | 3/5 | 9/20 | Jan 3, 2008 Poured into Sam Adam’s tasting glass from 12 ounce bottle. The beer has a nice dark color, with thin beige head that fades quickly. Small aroma, mostly of malt, but hints of caramel, dough, and an earthy scent. The flavor is very one-dimensional -- the bitterness, either from roasted grains or hops, overwhelms every other flavor. The mouthfeel is very thick and creamy, like you expect from an oatmeal stout, but somehow that too is overwhelmed with a powerful fizziness. jrob21 (1258), Atlanta, Georgia, USA
| 2.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 2/5 | 12/20 | Jan 1, 2008 In the same vein as their other beers I’ve had recently, thin and relatively unexciting. Would like a lot more body and character in my beer. Distinct grainy, malty flavor. Some slight chocolate aromas and flavors. hopson (594), Williamsville, New York, USA
| 2.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 2/5 | 10/20 | Jan 1, 2008 whoa- super metallic flavor that does not die down with age. Not solid in a very competitive category. stison42 (318), Blacksburg, Virginia, USA
| 2.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 4/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 1/5 | 12/20 | Jan 1, 2008 Black, some head. Oaty aroma. Slight creaminess in mouth and flavor. Chocolaty. Not smooth taste though, rough and unfinished. Gregis (1132), Shawnee, Kansas, USA
| 2.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 5/10 | 2/5 | 8/20 | Jan 1, 2008 Pours a dark brown, almost black, with garnet highlights and a dense, creamy, light tan head. The aroma is a muted but pleasant blend of chocolate, roasted malt and faint oatmeal. The mouthfeel is on the light side of medium-bodied and fairly slick with a rough, astringent finish. The flavor is considerable drop-off from the nose: roasted malt, faint dark chocolate and a solid hit of lactose-like sourness. I’m a pretty big fan of oatmeal/sweet stouts, but this one is a bit rough around the edges.
