Pours dark brown with a tan head. Smells of sweet malt and roasty with some spicy hints and dark fruit. Tastes sweet and roasty with a decent depth and a nutty finish.

Dark black beer, sticky off-white head. Aroma is lightly roasty with a fairly prominent acidic note. Some char and heavy roast on the nose. Flavour is charry and coffeeish with a light oatmealy character. The roast is quite intense but the palate is thin giving the beer an astringent flavour. The finish is lightly roasty but short-lived. Meh.

Nose of smoky and candied oatmeal, charred grains and overtoasted bread. Sweet maple and smoke and soy flavor, with some creamed oatmeal and charred burnt ends. Probably one of the better of these Saranac recipes, and it’s executed well, but it’s simple and a little too sweet, with far too much of that common character you find in every Saranac.

This beer is better than the rating would indicate. Pours deep brown with a 2-finger off-white head. Aroma of roasty malt, chocoff, oatmeal topped with brown sugar. The flavor is roasty malty, with a lot of dark chocolate hints. Somewhat watery for a stout but pretty good nonetheless.

12 ounce bottle from the winter assortment 12-pack. Smooth, bubbly quick-decaying head topping a not-quite-black translucent body...simple, pleasant mocha nose, perhaps some toasted marshmallow, desserty...in the body, light sticky chocolaty sweetness at first quickly changing to dry roastiness, with a somewhat chalky mouthfeel late, lactic vinous qualities that create an unpleasant and uncalled for sourness, and a slightly thin (but all-too-typical for Saranac) mouthfeel...doesn’t add up to much I’m afraid though like most from this brewer it’s drinkable and forgettable rather than memorably bad.

From the winter sampler pack. The body is black, but shows plenty of ruby when held to light. The very thin head is light tan colored. The aroma is roasted walnut along with some light coffee and mocha cream. The taste is nasty cheap milk chocolate with some light burnt toast crust. There is a strange finish of day old coffee. Not a very good oatmeal, but not bad either.
