Dacrza (148), Great Meadows, New Jersey, USA Jan 13, 2008 Came in a 12-pack winter sampler... staunch black body with a soft, creamy brown head--like a milk stout... light notes of soft roasted malt and a dash of chocolate--some hay/grass as well... carbonation indeed--head smooths initial mouthfeel into a fizzy finish... smooth (again) and thin on the toasted promise of aroma and appearance... chocolate, yes, and a bit bitter too... generally light and soft... quickly exhaled out flavor...after having a few memorable stouts this fall, this offering is best as a sampler companion than a six-pack pick-up...
timsilvia32 (183), born in Michigan, North Carolina, USA Jul 20, 2008 Nice dark pour with a tan head. Slight roast coffee/malt aromas. Kind of lighter bodied than expected. Roasted malt/mocha/coffee flavors in limited amounts. Dry on the finish. Not bad, kind of like their Russian Imperial, there are just some things missing. If you were just starting try darker brews, this could be one to try as a warm up. Hance07 (176), DownSouth, Georgia, USA Jun 14, 2008 Pours dark brown nearly black with small tan head. Watery mouthfeel for a stout with slight roasted flavor. A little bitter on the finish. Seems more like a porter than a stout to me. VTHopHead (666), Barre, Vermont, USA May 18, 2008 Bottle - Poured a very dark black/brown with a small foamy light tan head. Some lacing on the glass. Aroma is full of darkly roasted malts with a small amount of coffee and chocolate. Flavor is indistinct and lacking (a Matt trademark)... some roasted malts and a small amount of hop bitterness. Truly unremarkable... definitely not worth repeating... Haslinger (511), Syracuse, New York, USA May 16, 2008 Bottle from the Saranac Winter mixpack. A good chocolate aroma, some hops taste along with the chocolate, some roasted malt taste. I can’t really taste any oatmeal but this is a decent stout that I would drink again but not buy. Immy (1547), Virginia Beach, Virginia, USA May 13, 2008 12 oz bottle. Dark brown with a thick beige head. Rich, sweet chocolate nose, mild black coffee, mildly roasty. Actually smells pretty good. Body is a bit light, but smooth. Oh my. The flavor is not too good - chalky dark chocolate, sweet and dry at the same time, tastes cheap. Empty, chalky bittersweet chocolate finish. Matt brewing continues to underwhelm.
