UPDATED: SEP 16, 2003 Clear, deep amber lager. Small, frothy, off-white head.
Hearty and malty nose with an alcoholic and beefy punch.
Disappointing flavor. No real flavor to speak of. Slightly sweet.
Medium-bodied with a creamy mouthfeel and lively carbonation.

2.2 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 8/20
Poured a darker and clear amber color wih a small sized head. Lighter aromas and tastes of bread, maybe some yeast, and malts. I struggled to pin this one down. Thinner body. Lightly sweet.

3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
12 oz bottle. Pale orange colour with a thin white head. Aroma is decently malty, toast, bready and a bit of sweet munich malt as well. Flavour is similar albeit wit a touch of noble hop flavour as well. A bit of metallic character that I’m not a fan of, but it’s not overly distracting. Soft herbal hop finish. Nice balance, easy drinking. Pretty good effort.

2.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 1/5 OVERALL 7/20
Tasted from a 12oz bottle purchased in Boulder, Colorado. Copper-burnt orange appearance with a medium size head that disappears quite quickly. Amber malty aroma that smells syrupy. Bland amber flavor with not a whole lot going on. Bitter finish and not all that smooth. Not horrible but definitely a below average beer.

I love fall beer. Even a brewery like Saranac excites me when I see fresh Oktoberfest on the shelf. Can’t say it’s the best beer in the world, but for a rainy, cool, weekend, a hint that fall is right around the corner, Oktoberfest is very much appreciated. Nose is a bit plain and stale, with some faint sweetness, faint bread crust and toast notes, and some faint pumpkin spice and dried leaves. Faint being the key – it’s rather plain, but since it’s fresh there’s no glaring defects or age on this bottle. Taste slightly of notebook paper behind the more obvious semi-sweet grains, corn and toast. Overall decent enough, but alongside the Weihenstephaner and Otter Creek had at the same time, it doesn’t stand up.
