best of the sampler (and only ale). color is right in between American and English pale ale colors - dark golden. this actually has a nice body -medium. very little head. malt and hop are fairly well balanced; they fight it out on your tongue at the end and the hops wins out by the judges vote. not bad.

UPDATED: DEC 16, 2004 Clear orange with almost no head. Light grassy hops and light fruits in the nose, starts slightly bitter, and ends slightly sweet. Light bodied with a thin ending.

Had a few bottles of this after I took the kids swimming. This brew pours a sparkling
copper. The generous off-white creamy head has good lacing and is fully lasting. The
nose is perfume, resin, and cheese. The flowery flavor is fairly well balanced with a warm
spiciness, but tastes a little soapy for my liking. The finish is long and bitter. The medium
body is creamy/dry and lively with a finish that feels somewhat alcoholic, and somewhat
astringent. None of the beers in my Saranac Trail Mix Sampler sixer tasted fresh, and this
one followed suit. In the world of English Pales, this one falls short.

It hasn’t altered my perception of life but it is an especially drinkable palate-pleaser.

Nice copper color. Reminds me of a hoppy version of Bass Ale. However, the hops are not overpowering which gives it a balanced flavor. I am a newcomer to Matt Brewing’s offerings but am very impressed so far.

The fuggles and goldings are easily noticed in this hoppy pale ale. It’s decent for its style. Perhaps not as thick and malty as some. Saranac often brews up less-aggressive, more mainstream beers from each style.

Very average pale ale, english in style with muted hop flavor. I m not a huge fan of this brewery, and this is probably one of their better beers.

Not too bad. It kind of reminds me of Sam Adams Pale Ale, which really isn’t a bad thing. There is just enough bitterness to make me think of saranac’s black and tan, though.
