3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
12oz bottle. Orange/red/amber hued body with a nice thick light tan head. About 2.5 fingers thick, dense and creamy, with good retention. Some excellent lacing for the style is present as well. A really good looking beer. Nose of bitter citrus hops, floral perfume hops, caramel malt, sweet fleshy fruits and some soapy notes. Fore is pretty heavily astringent and bitter, rolling along the tongue we get sweet caramel malts and some sweet citrus fruits. Back end is more of the same, leading to a healthy dose of bitterness in the swallow. This thing isn’t perfect or super in your face or anything like that, but damn if I don’t like it quite a bit. I could knock a few of these back as a session brew. Medium bodied, prickly carbonation, slightly oily. Finish is bitter, lengthy, then at the very end some watery notes. Good beer.

* Old rating, 355 ml, 2010. Malzig-süßliches Bier. Schöne hopfenaromatische Note, die etwas unter der Süße liegt, Nicht zu ausgeprägt, süffig-frisch. Nett.

2.7 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20
12 oz bottle into a pint glass.
A: Pours a clear copper color. There’s a little under two fingers worth of off-white colored head, and the retention is actually quite good. Plenty of lacing is left behind, as well.
S: There is a slight hoppiness to the nose, floral in nature. But primarily, the strongest note is caramel and toffee from the malts. It’s certainly hoppier than most standard EPAs, but too malty to be a proper APA - and the malts aren’t the kind that strike me the right way.
T: Looking at is as an English-style pale ale, it’s a bit hoppier than the norm, thankfully. Herbal, piny bitterness hits the palate first, albeit in a restrained fashion. After the midtaste, the caramel-laden malts come to the forefront. They’re the textbook crystal malts (blegh), and I don’t like them. Having said that, this is just dry enough where I’m almost not bothered by them. But damn, I wish this had even more hops.
M: Kind of sweet...given how the last two Saranac beers were pretty damn dry, it’s disappointing that this has a sweeter, heavier feel. It’s not undrinkable per se, just not at all effortless.
O: It’s honestly mildly successful as an English-style pale ale...but a failure as a ’Murican pale ale. I don’t even like (most) EPAs, so this one is a misfire to me. A tick is a tick, though.

2.8 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bottle to shaker glass. Pours clear amber, quick head, some lacing. Aroma of pine and caramel. Tastes about the same on the sweet side. Light bodied, medium carbonation, soapy mouth feel. Finishes lightly bitter with notes of herbs, caramel, pine and a little metallic. Average.

Saranac Pale Ale (US) - EPA - 5.5% 2.8/5
35 cl bottle, bb dec.2014. Copper color, short but lacing offwhite head. Hoppy nose. Aroma is sharp, hoppy with soap and citrus, yeast and burnt wood, yucky at first, don’t lnow if this bottle is too aged, but feels like homemade, alcoholic already. Taste is quite sour. Caramel malts and slight bitterness in the finish. Medium bodied. Quite solid EPA but not astonishing.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
I remember this being one of the first "microbrews" I had back when I was 16 as this was one of the few available. When Pete’s Wicked Ale was chocolatey hopped goodness long before they were bought by coors and reformulated to schwag. This pale ale is English instyle, malts offer notes of caramel, balanced bland hop profile gives a somewhat apple cider flavor. being an hour from where this is brewed and its mass production I will inevitably have this again when I’m stuck needing a beer and this is the domestic micro brew available.

3.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Actually a pretty good pale ale. Nice lasting head. Aroma is caustic hop aroma... but still solid. Nice mouthfeel and actually pretty good flavor. As good as most pale ales out there a bit above average.

2.8 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Stolen from the work fridge (yay!): Pours amber with a bubbly head and bubbly body. Aroma is toffee, detergent, some caramel, light hops. Taste is lightly sweet. Kind of nondescript. Aftertaste is light as well. This is easy to drink, but it is certainly not exciting to drink.
