2.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 11/20
12oz bottle into a pint glass.
Pours a clear dark brownish-red with a two finger off-white head. Really pretty impressive head retention and lacing that surprised me quite a bit.
The aroma is a nice mixture of piny hops and caramel/toasted malt. Hops are quite strong but not so much to overpower the malt. The one mark against it is a slight metallic note.
The flavor, unfortunately, doesn’t quite stack up to the appearance and aroma. Pine is very subdued with a distracting metal flavor coming through. Lots of caramel with a slight hint of dark bread and light toast. Bitterness is quite high making this beer a little unbalanced. A little tartness on the tip of the tongue and an acrid bitterness on the back of the throat don’t go together very well. Mouthfeel is quite sticky, more than I feel it should be.
Overall, this beer is really unbalanced and not too good. The bitterness is too high and doesn’t balance well at all. Nice try but doesn’t quite make the cut.

Bottle poured a clear reddish amber with a small lingering amber head. Aromas of carmel, earthiness, pine and citrus. Palate was medium bodied and crisp with a dry finish. Flavors of carmel, earthiness, pine and a hint of citrus with a crisp dry bitter lingering earthy finish.

3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
12 oz. Clear copper with a small ring of bubbles. Nose is earthy orange, menthol, wood, toffee. Flavors of orange toffee, toasted nut, caramel apple, earthy resin, menthol and woody pith. Light-medium body is well balanced and dryish, with light, smooth carbonation. This would be really good without the menthol.

2.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20
12 ounce bottle, winter sampler, Harris Teeter Barracks Charlottesville. Pours a slightly hazy copper color with a thin frothy white head. Decent head retention. Aroma of caramel malts, citrus and herbal hops. The taste is bitter citrus hops and faint male malts. Medium bodied, not very well balanced.

3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
12oz into a glass. Pours a caramel, ruby red. Aroma is sour, grapefriut, coned hops, amber waves. Taste is hoppy up front, soapy, sour, and intersting for this hybrid. Smooth going down and no real bite after makes this one thrive on a continous flow. No head retention, the ipa feeling comes and goes rather quick, more like a hoppy amber here, but nice bottle art and the hops are pleasurable. I like to try different beers.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
12oz bottle. Filtered brown-amber, thin soapy head. Relatively clean and straightforward west coast amber, in a good way. If calling a beer a Red IPA is what it takes to make a good hoppy amber, I can accept that. Has some nice hop character, but not much fanciness there, just straightforward bittering for the most part. Overall it’s pretty clean, well balanced, and enjoyable. Some amber vanilla notes, balanced by the soapy citrus hops. Ambers lose my interest fast, this is not really an IPA.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bottle from Capone’s. Pours clear deep coppery with ruby edged and 2-finger off-white head. Nose is piney resiny hops, mild vinous fruit, caramel malt. Tastes very resiny, sprucey, with caramel malt, some peppery notes, and an overall astringent dryness. Not bad.

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Amber/reddish. Nose is heavily malt dominated. Palate is the same, with some hop backbone. More of an Amber or IPA, but I liked it.

2.9 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 10/20
12 oz. bottle. Pours a medium, well retained, off white head, with heavy lacing, over a clear, reddish amber (SRM 15)......nose is cereal, with caramel malt tones,.....taste is cereal, light toffee/caramel, finishing with a mild bitterness.....mouth feel medium, slightly sticky, carbonation low. The hop backbone is understated, so the malts dominate. It comes closer to being an Amber than an IPA. The best thing about this beer is its appearance. It reminds me of some of the Shiner creations.
