An IPA with a wry twist, Saranac Rye IPA is an aggressively hopped brew, sure to take your taste buds on an adventure. We’ve stepped away from the mold of typical IPAs and selected premium rye malt and a unique mix of spicy hops. Look for a crisp, brazen finish.

Certainly not their best offering, pretty bland and uninteresting. Tastes like a mildly hopped IPA with a bit of a wheaty backbone to it. Goes down fairly easily, but a bit too bitter to be truly sessionable.

Ryeness prevalant like an obscure rhino at the beach this is solid! the hops are mad wild which drives home the point of self gratification of the brew. Ingest and become one with the rye!

November 2009 Beer of the Month Club , 12/7/09

Aroma: Aroma is rather faint, consists mostly of fruit, honey, and some grains
Appearance: Pours a clear orange color with a fizzy white head, some lace
Flavor: The flavor has some fruity hops, sweet malts, rye, bit of metallic finish
Palate: This one is fairly light of body, a bit on the astringent side, fizzy carbonation, dry mouthfeel
Overall Impression: Generally speaking, I don’t know what to say about this beer. It’s just OK. Not a whole lot else to say. Drinkable, but you could skip it too.

**Just submitted a Photo for this one as well, as it was missing one.

Shared Bob’s bottle. Grainy nose, complex palate with a hop kick. Nice, but not much to say about it, a bit average for an IPA but that is still a good thing.

UPDATED: DEC 25, 2009 Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured a bright amber color with a large yellow-white head. The aroma was faint rough fruity hops. The flavor was dryish, bitter and a bit rough with some fruity hops and not a whole lot else. A touch earthy towards the dry finish. Ok.

12 ounce bottle from the winter sampler. Pours a clear golden color with a moderate sized head. Poor head retention and fair lacing. Aroma is very faint... caramel, spicy rye and leafy hops. All very faint. Taste is fruity hops with rye and a bitter hoppy finish. Fruity throughout. Medium bodied.

Bottle. Pours golden orange with tight white head. Aroma is floral with grass, grain, and caramel. Flavors of grain, cheese (w/ cheddar, gouda, and swiss), and an earthy bitterness. Smooth and silky. Could use a little more body. A little dull but satisfying.

Bottle pours light yellow amber with a white head. Aroma is light hops and a bit of malty cereal. Flavor is bitter hop, watery, with a bit of rye spiciness. Disappointing attempt.

12 oz bottle (Thanks as always to Pam for the BOTM gift). When I saw a rye ipa in the sampler box, I got fairly excited initially. Upon trying this beer, I immediately became disappointed. Its not like this is a terrible beer, but its just highly uninteresting, especially considering 1) its an ipa, so you’d expect at least some nice full flavors and bitter notes, and 2) its brewed with rye, which usually adds another layer of complexity to a beer. The notes for the both the aroma and flavor can be summed up by light cereal malts and light grassy herbal hops. It is highly drinkable though, and has a good crispness to it, but it is a feel that I prefer to find in a pilsner. Sadly, across the board, there could be some big improvements here.
