CaptainCougar (4663), Rockville, Maryland, USA Feb 24, 2008 Pours a transparent orange amber with a thin, spotty-lacing off-white head. Aroma of lightly sweet earthy dark caramel and mild sweaty peat. Body starts lightly sweey and toasty malty with some drier earthy notes before a musty, lightly smoky finish. Has some true to style notes, but is overall pretty bland and dry. muzzlehatch (4424), Burlington, Vermont, USA Nov 4, 2001 Yeah, the nose and flavor have some nice sweet caramel notes, but a Scotch ale should overpower, it should be something to savor and drink on special occasions. This is just ok; to me, more like a sweeter, thinner, less carbonated red or brown ale. acrdz (4364), Boulder, Colorado, USA Nov 4, 2007 12oz bottle. Filtered and clear with a dark orange and brown color. Terrible nose of cardboard, moldy wildflower honey and cheap pancake syrup. Flavor is putridly smoky like rauchbier, with an unpleasent sour, old cedar wood note, with a plasticy and oily flavor in the finish. This is an absolutely terrible beer. DocLock (4170), Lower Pottsgrove, Pennsylvania, USA Nov 27, 2004 Wow, as I unseal this one (I think it was part of the 2002 Twelve Beers of X-mas Collection), I am reminded that I have tried just about every Saranac beer. I guess my relationship with Saranac is like the relationship of a man who’s found "an affordable 20 dollar call girl" that he really likes. It’s not the best of the genre, but it will do around the holidays (and at any time of the year for that matter).
