3.7 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
(From Notes) Pours a dark brown, cream colored head. Head dissipates to a thin layer. Excellent lacing. Heavy malt aroma. Full tasting, sweet malt taste. Nice mouth-feel, definitely a winter beer. Not tasting the vanilla though. Has a coffee taste, which is rather pleasant. Good drink-ability in its class.

3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Poured from a 12oz. bottle into a Unibroue snifter. Poured a clear, dark red-brown color but ends up opaque and nearly black in the glass. The short off-white head had moderate retention and leaves little lacing on the glass. The sweet aroma is of roasted malts, natural vanilla, toffee, and caramel. Some alcohol appears after warming. The taste is malty with a pronounced vanilla flavor: A bit overdone IMO, but certainly not unpleasant. The result is a vanilla flavored milk stout. Hops are detectable, but too low to make this seem like a typical American stout. A bit too sweet and syrupy. Smooth and creamy, with a near-medium body that is not as full as it ought to be. Low-medium carbonation. Finish is slightly dry and sticky.
O: If you like dark beers with a good bit of vanilla, this one’s for you.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Notes from 12-21-2008
12oz bottle poured into glass. Very dark black color with foamy brownish head. Only a slight amount of light gets through the beer. Head turns rockier as it slowly dissipates. Cannot pick up much aroma besides the hints of vanilla. Also hints of malts. Good taste, strong chocolate malts present, caramel tastes also. Of course vanilla. Not much carbonation, full body. Overall a great new beer from Saranac, has some room to improve but still something to sit back in the winter and enjoy.

2.7 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 11/20
Refrigerated bottle poured into a shaker. Pours dark brown with medium brown highlights and fluffy beige head. Pretty good lacing, thin body, medium carbonation, and sweet vanilla aroma. Taste is roasted malt, caramel, some off vanilla, hint of dark chocolate, and light bitter hop finish.

3.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Bottled. Poured medium brown with a tall, well-retained beige head. The aroma picked up lots of sweet vanilla and chocolate, with not a whole lot else coming through.. quite sweet, but I can’t say I didn’t enjoy it. The flavor found similar stuff.. candied vanilla all over the place, with lightly-roasted chocolate and black malts around.. some ashy bitterness and abrasive carbonation on the edges.. finished artificially-sweet with unpleasant roasty bitterness and vanilla.. enough decent stuff in there, but it wasn’t close to great. Light-medium bodied with higher carbonation on the palate.. too sweet and oddly bitter at times, but it was a decent drinker overall.

3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
12oz into a pint. Pours a pure black syrupy flow. Settles profoundly into the glass and the vanilla makes itself apparent from the get go. But its like a knock off splenda vanilla. Sweet, yet watered down, as is the whole brew. the flavor pairing does mesh together, but Im getting a second generation mix up here. Drinkable, but still holds a novelty aspect rather than a pure genius microbrew. Cant blame them for trying.

2.8 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 12/20
Bottle. Pours dark brown with tan head. Aroma of vanilla extract and dark roasted grain. Flavor is the same with hints of dark chocolate, notes of caramel and kinda dry. Mouth feel is light-medium but thin and watery with high carbonation. Overall, doesn’t seem like alot of love went into this, just tastes fake.
