3.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 12/20
Poured from bottle. Aroma of hops, malt and ocean. Cloudy gold, thin white head with some lacing. Floral and citrus hops, some creamy malt, pepper. Aftertaste is off - not sure what it is, but it doesnít taste right and hurts this beer. Too bad cause this could be a great beer.

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 14/20
12oz Bottle. The pour was a murky straw yellow with an average (1-2 finger) white creamy head that was mostly lasting, reducing to a thin puddled film and medium collar with excellent sheets of lacing.
The aroma was of a light grain malt, resin and citrus hops and a sweaty Belgian yeast with a note of citrus (grapefruit and orange peel) and a bit of coriander.
The taste was lightly sweet and fruity with just a touch of spice early on, progressing with a nice citrusy hoppy taste, along with a strong grainy yeast presence and a citrus peel bite towards the finish. The flavor hung around for a good long time following the swallow with the bitter citrus peel taste fading ever so slowly off the taste buds.
Mouthfeel was a couple steps beyond light in body with a dry, creamy texture and a medium carbonation.
Overall this was a tasty and well balanced brew with a pleasing spicy citrus favor and a nice creamy drinkability... www.facebook.com/KAJIIsBeerReviews

2.3 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 7/20
Bottle: Pours a cloudy golden yellow with a creamy white head. Aroma is slight pine... citrus. Tastes citrusy...but not in a really good way... the wonderful yeasty character of the wheat beer is competing with the hops too much I think... Improved a bit as I was drinking it, but not an awesome beer. Nice idea... but Iím not sure the styles were meant to mingle.

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20
On tap @ The Pony NYC. Really cloudy almost hazy orange golden in the glass and it has a small quickly islandy off-white top. Smells OK with a little fruitiness, a good dash of hops and a little buzz of grapefruit and grapefruit zest. Lots of hops here, lots of citrussy flavors. Mild oily on the mouthfeel and the carbonation is just below average. Light grassy and also light dry in the finish. Quite easy to drink, nothing spectacular but still quite good. 19.06.2013

2.4 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 9/20
9/02/2013: Saranac White IPA... Aroma has musty wheat malt with hints of orange; dirty, messy dark golden color with an off-white head; Moderate honey/biscuit maltiness, oat mellowness, citrus-soft melon in the middle, terrible, off-putting, sharp smooth, bitter orange peel/pithe in the finish; average bitterness level overall; semi-creamy mouthfeel, medium-body; yep, definitely no a fan of this one either; IPA and Witbier just donít work together, in my opinion... 2.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 10/20
Cloudy golden color with a good white head, streaks and stripes of lace. Taste is hard to pin down - wheaty malt with very mild spices, moves easily through the palate to a tart and bitter spice finish. The bitter isnít a typical hop contribution, but is more an extension of the spices. Not particularly satisfying, not particularly an IPA, not particularly recommended.

2.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 12/20
Bottle, 200th rating for this beer. Nose orange and lemon zest and coriander explosion. Pours hazy golden, leaning toward brown even, with a soapy white head. Taste scratching spicy, abrasive lemon cleanser with coriander soup and mild-medium hop bitterness. Cleansing soapy feel, definite wheat. Medium-full body with plenty of carbonation and bitterness that outlasts all other flavors. Manages to find a nice middle ground between the two styles, but I donít think Iíd buy either of the pure strains and the mixture isnít so convincing to wipe away the spice overload.

2.5 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 9/20
Julian Bottle Date 2253 (8/13) Ė Beer is 7 days old
I donít drink a lot of beers made by the Matt Brewing Company. Well, aside from the $2 pints of Uncle Charlie when Iím at the Washington Tavern, but thatís another story. It isnít that I have anything against Saranacís beers, but their most popular beer (Saranac Pale) just doesnít resonate with me. I was at the grocery store and had a chance to buy a sampler six-pack put out by Saranac, so I threw caution to the wind and picked it up.
In my glass, Saranacís white IPA looks very witbier. It is a hazy light gold with a shock of foamy white head on top. If I didnít know better, Iíd assume that I was about to drink a Belgian White.
The aroma is mild. Honestly, Iíd say too mild. There are touches of hop presence, with floral and citrus notes incorporated without a doubt, and there is a hint of coriander and spice. That said, the whole nose is muted and uninspiring.
I knew that the taste of the beer would make or break this beer, and I know that I got a fresh bottle; the bottling date was listed as 225 and today is Julian date 232 by my count. The initial wave is bitter through and through, but it isnít a quenching bitter or a lip-smacking bitter. Instead, it is more of a slightly generic, almost medicinal bitterness. The aftertaste is mostly citrus with a hint of spice, and the wit character does not shine through much. It isnít really offensive, but it doesnít wow me either.
Saranac White IPA is definitely light in body, and I was shocked when I read that it is 6%. I imagine that this beer, if cold and on a hot day, would be thirst quenching if absolutely nothing else.
I give the good folks at Matt all the credit in the world here; witbier and IPA seems to me to be a totally reasonable match. Unfortunately, the execution here doesnít knock it out of the park for me, but I can see that there certainly could be an audience for this beer. I look forwarding to checking out the rest of the beers in the sampler six because I havenít had their offerings in a long time.
