4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 19/20
Pour from a 12oz bottle, impulse buy of a 4 pack at Hardings. Deep deep red brown amber - clear, not inky black but dark enough. A few fingers of pale off white head in the pour. Aroma dominated by hops - citrus and pine, a little floral. Taste is the barest hint of malt at the very start, toasted grain in the background, fine and complex hops start near the beginning and blossom as the swallow continues. Hops dominate with toasted grains and malt singing in the choir. Black IPA’s often seem to be a confused breed with the roasted grains and hops fighting for attention, but there is no confusion here, only excellence. A very fine brew.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Draft to tulip. Looks good for the style; a mostly opaque dull black with foamy beige head that slowly dissipates into sticky lacing. Smells and tastes of dark malt, chocolate, roast, and hops with an average mouthfeel. A solid Black IPA.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Hazy brown with a thin tan head that goes away slowly and leaves some lacing to boot. Aroma of citrus, nuts, chocolate and brown sugar. Taste is balanced with chocolate, dark roasted malts, citrus and a moderate bitter finish.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20
From the brewpub. Black in color and lots of roasted bitterness and then some bitter hops to finish it off. Decent for the style which I’m getting less into. Serving: Bottle

3.8 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Bottle. March 2013. Chocolate and dusty cocoa with a hint of mint on the nose. Muddy dark brown color. Great taste of classic chocolate stout flavors and well balanced bitterness and a long rich finish. Medium to full body.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle from Deli Lama. Pours a reddish brown with a tan head. Spots of lace. Aroma has cocoa, caramel and some grapes and pine. Taste is of sweet caramel, bakers chocolate, faint herbs and grapes. Medium bodied and slightly sticky. Finishes bittersweet in nice balance between the two with some length. Interesting parts - cocoa, chocolate, carmel and nicely bittersweet but not very IPAish. A thinner porter??

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottled in Jan. ’13. Pours super black with a thick khaki-mocha head that leaves a big hearty lace. Nose involves some chocolate, caramel, toast, coffee, and some faint evergreen and mint hop notes. Quite sweet flavor, with a fair bitterness. Thicker, creamy, rich, with a long toasty finish. Not super hoppy at this point, but very drinkable and in that stout/strong porter category by now.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle. Pours a murky dark brown with a big pillowy head that fades very slowly and leaves some lacing. Some pine hops in the aroma but it’s mostly creamy chocolate and light roasted coffee. Taste is hoppier than the aroma. Light sweetness, moderate bitterness. Very piney with some chocolate and coffee. Medium body, creamy mouthfeel. Pretty good.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle. Pours a rich black color with a nice java head. Nose is a whale of hops, with some pine and resin. Taste is bitter and hoppy from the moment it hits your palate, with some very subtle citrus. Finish is bitter with long lingering. Gotta love hops to love this one. Quaff Score 8 / 10

3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Pours a black with a very large and foamy beige head. The aroma has a kind of musty impression to it. I get chocolate, caramel, and grapefruit. The aroma isn’t very powerful either. The taste retains some citrus grapefruit, but is dominated by earthy malts. There is some smokiness in here and some slight chocolate. The grapefruit flavors come through stronger at the end, and makes up the aftertaste along with some smoke. Its long lasting as well. Medium in body, more slick in texture, and a decent amount of carbonation. The advertised alcohol content is a bit surprising. It doesn’t taste or feel like its as strong as it actually is. This one is alright from a style that I usually enjoy. Although I would probably choose others of this style over this.
