4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 19/20
Pour from a 12oz bottle, impulse buy of a 4 pack at Hardings. Deep deep red brown amber - clear, not inky black but dark enough. A few fingers of pale off white head in the pour. Aroma dominated by hops - citrus and pine, a little floral. Taste is the barest hint of malt at the very start, toasted grain in the background, fine and complex hops start near the beginning and blossom as the swallow continues. Hops dominate with toasted grains and malt singing in the choir. Black IPA’s often seem to be a confused breed with the roasted grains and hops fighting for attention, but there is no confusion here, only excellence. A very fine brew.

12 oz. bottle from DrSilverworm - thanks again, Chris! Pours a really dark, mostly opaque brown that settles down and shows some amber highlights. Small, spotty beige head. Big chocolate notes throughout, with milder roast, orange rind, peppery spice, tobacco, brown sugar, and toast. Medium-bodied, with moderate carbonation and a bitter, malty mouthfeel. Drinks bigger than 6.8%.

12oz bottle, purchased as a 4pk from Woodstock Wine & Cheese in Michigan. Code on bottle reads 130 325 825, it looks like... Black color. Pours with a bigger khaki head, that just stays put kinda. Leaves good, thicker lace. In the nose, there’s bigger roast, coffee, dark chocolate. Some smoke, hint of dark fruit. Earthy bitter hops. Bigger bitter taste, light to moderate sweet. Light spiciness in the end. Medium to bigger body. Smooth, kind of soft, lighter carbonation. Light slick finish. Alcohol works alright, just a light bit of roast. Solid enjoyable bigger bitter taste, good bigger cheap-tasting coffee in the finish. Solid, enjoyable stuff overall.

Had at their taproom in Douglas. Pours brown to black. Caramel and roast on the nose, and the flavor follows. Somewhat hoppy. Very smooth and clean. This is a very nice beer - the best of theirs that I’ve had so far. Very nice.

12 ounce bottle into tulip, bottled on 3/15/2014. Pours pitch black color with a 2 finger dense and rocky tan head with fantastic retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Nice soapy lacing clings around the glass. Aromas of grapefruit, tangerine, orange zest, floral, grass, pine, dark chocolate, cocoa, roasted malt, coffee, light char, and roasted earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance of deep roasted malt and citrus/pine hop notes; with solid strength. Taste of big grapefruit, tangerine, orange zest, dark chocolate, cocoa, roasted malt, coffee, light char, floral, grass, pine, and floral/roasted earthiness. Fair amount of roast/pine bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of grapefruit, tangerine, orange zest, dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, roasted malt, light char, floral, grass, pine, and floral/roasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Very nice complexity and robustness of citrus/pine hops and big roasted malt flavors; with a great bitterness/sweetness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a very creamy, smooth, and lightly chalky mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is well hidden with only a light warming present after the finish. Overall this is a very nice double Black IPA. All around good complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/pine hops and big roasted malt flavors; and very smooth to sip on for the ABV. A very enjoyable offering.

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20
Bottle: The aroma consists of moderate-heavy chocolate and caramel with the slightest touch of citrus. It pours a muddy brown with some orange highlights and a two finger beige head that fades to a thin film outlined by a slightly thicker ring. There have a good amount of thin webbing left on the sides of the glass. The flavor starts with moderate-heavy chocolate and caramel. The finish has some light roasted malt, light pine, and a touch of citrus. It’s medium bodied with mild carbonation and a somewhat soft mouthfeel. Overall, this isn’t bad, but it’s way too malty for my Black IPA preferences.

Excellent tatse, pretty much no smell. Very hoppy for a black IPA which I enjoyed.

Tasted from a 12oz bottle (Thanks Mike & George). It poured a deep, dark brown with a lighter brown head and heavy lacing. Has a rich chocolate malt aroma and a hopped chocolate taste with a touch of coffee. Saugatuck put this one together nicely.

3.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20
Bottle. Pours a solid black with a begs head. Aroma of roast malts, a hint of chocolate and a sour almost ammonia smell. Flavour is salty and heavy dark malt, while the body is medium to thin. Finish is slightly bitter, possibly more from the malts than the hops. Not IPAish to me.
