1.5 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 2/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 3/20
Pint at The Well. I guess Knoxville is not allowed to have a decent microbrewery creating drinkable American styles. I was not expecting much from this beer and I was let down. It’s a copper color with a white head. The aroma is unmistakably British with notes of toffee, wood, buttered popcorn, and vegetables. Already losing my appetite for beer from the aroma, the flavor really hammers my disdain for this moment. What a mess. British styles are supposed to be inoffensive, drinkable, watery. This is punishing from the get go with aggressive candy corn and butter flavor snidely sneering at my palate with an annoying lack of consonants and nonsensical rhyming slang. There is some kind of bitterness imparted by the hops and one could make a case that toffee flavor is present. The finish is thick and unforgiving. Candy corn and butter bomb.

Orange with foamy tan head and lace. Aroma is bready with light citrus hops. Dry malty start with a light/medium citrus bitter. A metallic after taste. Medium body with good carbonation.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Dark copper with a small head that leaves a ton of thick lacing. The aroma is mostly toasted, caramel malt with some light citrusy hops. The flavor is decent with a nice mix of both malt and hops. Pretty bitter for what it is but I’m not complaining.

3 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Draft at Brixx Knoxville West End. Pours yellow with a slight orange tint with an inch if white foam that leaves a bit of lacing. Not getting much on the nose. Fairly big pine all on the tongue with only a hint of bitterness on the finish. Solid but slightly watery in its execution.

On tap at Bearden Beer Market. Golden copper, thin white head. Smells crackery, with black pepper. Taste is lightly hoppy, with pepper and bread. Actually pretty good. I had a few...

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20
UPDATED: MAY 28, 2012 Draft pint. Clear and shiny, with a lasting ring of cream. Nose is archetypal English Ale: earthy, fruity notes of twangy-spiced caramel apple and dirty orange/old tangerine.Taste is the same with some additions of freshly malted barley grain and toasty bread. Near-medium bodied with light carbonation. Good example of the style, but I don’t accept the premise that an English Ale is what the beer drinkers in Knoxville need more of...
