You approach the solitary windswept pine as it sits stoically upon its tiny perch of Canadian Shield and you wonder to yourself, “Why does this beautiful tree stand alone?” Then as you step closer, in awe of its majestic splendour, a branch blows down and slaps you right across your face. Sawdust City’s Lone Pine IPA is aggressively hopped and bursting with flavours of pine and citrus, loaded with mounds of hops and balanced with a blend of 4 different malts. Like that truculent tree, each glass is like a pine bow across your face.

UPDATED: AUG 15, 2014 Drank straight from the can the first time so didn?t real get the full experience. Second time out of a glass - looked great with a head that disappears quickly. Really solid IPA.

You can smell this beer from across the room before you’ve even finished pouring it. Lots of pine, grapefruit rind, orange, caramel. Taste is pure hop bomb. The first sip was overwhelming, the second and third slightly less so. Thereafter the flavours start to pop all over. Lots of grapefruit and orange, and some bright tropical fruit in the background, with a bit of caramel from the malt. Finish is bitter, resinous pine, very dry. Great beer.

Really great resinous almost astringent bitter beer with and overwhelming aroma. Though not really full bodied and really drinkable. Great great beer.

Draught at Thirst and Miserable (among other places). Hazy orange with a small white ring of head. Smells of orange and resiny hops. Tastes pretty heavy with a nice dollop of hops. Very bitter. It’s readily available and I won’t turn one down. 2014-07-06

UPDATED: JUN 25, 2015 Beer revisited after one year. Original rating 2.8 Can bought at the LCBO. Pours golden orange color with a soapy white head. Fantastic aroma of pine, malt and floral hops. Taste is a balance of malt, pine and medium bitter hops with a pleasant bitter hops long aftertaste. Medium carbonation. Alcohol in the background. High drinkability!

650ml bottle. Pours a very hazy orange colour. Fairly thick white head that settles down nicely, leaving moderate lacing as drunk. Aromas are very piney hops, with hints of caramel. Tastes of citrus, pine, pineapple, and toffee. Overall, this IPA could go toe-to-toe with many of my favourites in the category, and might upset a few.

Very orange body. Almost the same colour as the label on the bottle. Great piney aroma. Some slight citrus notes, come through as well. In the bottle the hops are more bitter than flavorful, having faded somewhat from their original brightness. The bitterness lingers through the finish. Good, but better on draught.

That poor lone pine. I found a better home for him. In my belly. You won’t be lonely there with all those other beers. (It is a beer belly after all. My wife is so proud.) Pours a cloudy caramel with a finger of fully, off white head. Nose dominated by pine hops with solid malt in the back. The taste is good, those similar pine hops, but additionally a perfume flavour to the hops profile as well. Decent malt flavour and an lingering bitterness. Not bad.
