A big and bold Imperial Stout. Brewed with lots of roasted and chocolate malts, with a touch of special sugar added in to give that little something extra. Very, very black and very strong. Just the thing to curl up with while the snow flies!

Designed to withstand the grueling voyage from Earth to Uranus, Long Dark Voyage is a stout of the highest order. Ass-puckeringly bitter and dry as a bone, thus dark chocolate treat is quite dangerous and will sneak up on you from behind if you don’t keep your wits about you. You’ve been warned!

Last year’s offering was a mere 8.5%, but Sam boosted the ABV up a notch for 2015.

Pours an opaque black with a little tan head. Smell is a whole lot of coffee and a bit of chocolate. Palate is medium bodied though lacks a bit of carbonation. Taste is slightly sweet at first then gets bitter with lots of roasty flavour, before going into a long lasting bitter aftertaste. Also some good alcohol warmness in the throat.

Tap. Pours a dark brown/black. Light treacly, light coffee aroma. Medium to full body, medium carbonation. Milk and dark choc, treacle, lemon, orange... OK. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Black with a decent beige head. Aroma is liquorice, chocolate, roast, hint of anise. Full bodied, slightly oily mouthfeel, roasty on the palate with a long, astringent finish. Taste is dark chocolate, liquorice, charred wood. A little tannic.

Deep jet black pour with a frothy tan head and lace. Chocolate malt aroma with a roasted coffee influence. Delicious full bodies flavour, liquorice, coffee, dark chocolate, fudge cake goodness. Silky texture. Lovely dark alcoholic finish. Little sticky but a gorgeous beer.

Really, really smooth stout and the alcohol isn’t felt until long after I’ve left the bar. Not much on the nose but plenty of dark chocolate and licorice on the swallow. Some dark fruits, pine, toast and coffee as well. Easy drinking for an extra strong beer.

473 ml can. Black our, thin foamy tan head, fairly rocky but doesn’t last too long. Roasted malt aroma, dark chocolate, vanilla. Taste follows with additional flavours of smoke. Fully body, slightly slick.

Pour is jet black and motor oil thick, with a thin brown cap that fades to a ring. Nose is chocolate and toasted grain but with a surprising amount of fruitiness. I get a pleasant grape/prune juice aroma here (which may speak to my age). Taste is more chocolate and dark fruit, roasted grain, with a piney, slightly warm finish. For 10.2% the alcohol is incredibly concealed. Body is full/heavy and creamy. Delicious stuff.

Tallboy from the LCBO. Pours black. Jet black. As black as space itself. Like a thick oil. Medium head, retains a nice lacing. Nose is slightly astringent. Maybe piney. Flavour is...wow. Incredible. Deep roasted caramel, dark chocolate, herbs, pine. Wow. Hides the 10%+ ABV well. Very well balanced. A little too much hop presence for a stout, in my opinion, but balances well with the malts and alcohol. Beautiful mouth feel. Slick and almost oily. Carbonation is just right.

2015/02/22 - Pours an opaque, jet black colour with a thin, foamy, tan head that quickly vanishes. Aroma is cocoa, coffee, wood, vanilla, nutty tones and roasted/ smokey malts. Taste is bitter chocolate, vanilla, woody tones, roasted coffee, sweet toasted malts and booze. Mouthfeel is slick, with average carbonation and a dry, bittersweet, warming finish. Good stuff. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
