Mahogany perfection glistening off the lake, it’s pristine finish shimmers as it glides effortlessly across the water. The gentleman driver leans back and relaxes, letting the fresh lake air blow through his hair. Images of those classic wood powerboats populate the memories of Muskoka and lakes across North America. And to commemorate this bygone era, Sawdust City has brewed a beer as classic and pristine as the waterfront that once ruled our lakes. Ol’ Woody Alt is a lagered ale, fashioned after the beers from the Dusseldorf region of Germany. Filtered to a gleaming mahogany this ale drinks as smooth as the finish on those iconic wood boats of yesteryear. So come on down to Sawdust City and savour a taste of the past.

On tap @ Gig’s - taps a lightly hazed copper-orange with a puffy lasting off white cap. Moderate carbonation. Aroma is robust with Munich red malts - toasty and noble hopping, some light fruitiness. Medium bodied creamy mouth feel, smooth malt accented character. Flavor is fairly well balanced between toasty-bready malts and herbal woody hops - long dry bittersweet nutty malty finish with a hop bite. If I closed my eyes I’d think I was drinking a fresh Dusseldorf Alt. I enjoy this lagered amber ale and it is probably the best Albier we have had in this market since the Duckstein supply dried up.

473 ml can from the brewery. Pours an opaque amber colour with a small off-white head. Aroma is bread, caramel. Taste is pretty much the same. Not bad, but nothing exceptional either.

Interesting brewery, but this particular beer, not so much. Not that there’s much you could do with the style. It’s a decent example, I suppose.

Can from the Beer Store, beautiful colour, and quite smooth. never sure with Alts too sweet maybe. But good basic tasty beer was what I was told and that is what I found. This will not be on the top shelf of the beer fridge, but is has a place for sure.

473ml can. Pours a clear, light caramel with a film head. Aroma has notes of toasted bread, caramel, traditional hops, and pilsner malt. Taste is balanced. A bit of caramel and bread mixed with a touch of roasted malts and a bit of hops to balance it out. Medium body and carbonation. Clear in the mouth with a good carbonation. Overall tasty. Good flavours that would be welcome by most. Caramel, toasted bread, and a hint of roasted malt.

Clear coppery red colour. Mute aroma with biscuit, malt, slight toast, floral hops and a hint of earth. Light palate. Some toast and biscuit flavour, sort of watery mid palate and a malty finish. Not their best brew but not that bad.
