Mahogany perfection glistening off the lake, it’s pristine finish shimmers as it glides effortlessly across the water. The gentleman driver leans back and relaxes, letting the fresh lake air blow through his hair. Images of those classic wood powerboats populate the memories of Muskoka and lakes across North America. And to commemorate this bygone era, Sawdust City has brewed a beer as classic and pristine as the waterfront that once ruled our lakes. Ol’ Woody Alt is a lagered ale, fashioned after the beers from the Dusseldorf region of Germany. Filtered to a gleaming mahogany this ale drinks as smooth as the finish on those iconic wood boats of yesteryear. So come on down to Sawdust City and savour a taste of the past.

Amber color with creamy head. Vulgar aroma, some bread, caramel and light puke. Dry caramel flavor, with a dusty edge; ordinary bitterness. Not the right malt profile to be an Alt. Quite boring.

A clear amber alt with a thin off white head. In aroma, sweet fruity malt with light grassy hops, grainy notes and light spicy notes. In mouth, a nice biscuit malt with mineral notes, grassy hops, nice and smooth with light woody character. On tap at Arrow and Loon.

On tap at Burger Bar. Mahogany coloured body, no head. Malty though not exceptionally rich aroma. A little hoppy taste, with toasted malt. A tad above average mouthfeel, however also a little sour and astringent. Not very complex

2011-12-15. Crisp brown body, nice beige head and lace. 3+ Pleasantly malt lightly toasty malt, very light tang to it. Aroma is similar, very slightly nutted touched in the aroma and flavour. Pretty nice, malt forward take on the style. Smooth average plus bodied palate. Definitely one for a session, I didn’t love it at first but the malt develops as you go and I ended up ordering another. I haven’t had enough Alts to comment on authenticity, but it was enjoyable. Can. Nose is metal, a bit of hop, touch of caramel. Amber-orange, clear, with a fine head. Caramel flavor turns dry, a bit of minerals and earth. Creamy and drinkable but so bland.

Tap at C’est What. Amber pour with a tight white head. The head is tan and fairly sticky. The aroma has a fairly pronounced spicy/herbal character in addition to some soft malt sweetness. There is also a little bit of light spice. There is a little bi of unfortunate diacetyl. Very assertive minerally bitterness. There is a little bit of clove and soft dustiness. Assertively hopped.

[4192-20111215] Bottle. Floral toasty grains aroma. Clear, light amber body with a quick foamy off-white head. Sweet caramel toast and leafy hops flavour. Medium body. Tasty but a little sweet. (7/3/7/3/13) 3.3

tap at beer brothers, ottawa. clear golden orange pour with an off-white head, some retention and lacing. intense candied oranges - barmaid suggested something more like hoppy froot loops - darn she’s right, now i can only taste that artificial stuff, touch of spruce and a lot of pepper, and miscellaneous spices that don’t blend in, doughy, lightly fruity toasted malts - pumpkins, hint of woodsy notes, herbal and grassy. some sweetness. moderate carbonation, light to medium body - oily, grassy-fruity sweetish finish. alt as in alternative. not an altbier. ackward. DP - as i politely suggested to staff.

Smells like malt, has a very typical altbier aftertaste with a lot of bitter barley. Really good lacing. Bitterness has good presence, a kind of grainy bitterness. Decent. On tap at WVRST.

Draught at Burger Bar. Dec. 21, 2011. Pours a clear deep copper-gold with a small diminishing frothy off-white head. Mild, slightly sweet aroma of grain, caramel malt and spices. Flavour’s a nice surprise as I’m not a huge fan of the style, with lightly toasted caramel malt, grain, fruit and a decent bitter finish -- just a touch watery but not enough to detract. Average bodied. Pretty good, I enjoyed it.
