[5354-20130507] Tap. Barbecue roasted malt aroma. Clear, dark brown red body with a quick foamy off-foamy head. Smoked barbecue sauce flavour has a built in spicy hotness. Medium body has an underlying heat. Interesting. (6/3/6+/3/13) 3.1

Pint at the Loon. Deep brown-black with a thin light mocha head. Nice roasted malts, some dark chocolate and coffee, a definite chili pepper smell, sort of a warm spice (cinnamon), nice. Medium body, pillowy effervescence. Lots of hot red pepper flavour, nice dark-roasted malts and chocolate, coffee, a cinnamon-ish note, nice; dry with gentle bitterness, nice spice heat and a chocolate, coffee and cinnamon finish.

On tap @ the Bent Elbow - pours a dark hazed black-brown with a decent tan cap. Aroma is spicy, cocoa, vanilla and, yes, pepper. Medium bodied, prickly mouth feel. Flavour has the front side much like a robust coffee stout but with underlying pepper, yet no heat....long rich finish with the pepper coming forward a bit. Warming comes after the sip with pepper heat replacing alcohol warmth. Interesting beer ...one of the few pepper beers I can drink.

Red Rocket coffee beans, vanilla beans and cayenne pepper are added to Sawdust City’s Skinny Dipping Stout to create this black product. The coffee and cayenne are highly evident in the bouquet and flavour, but neither overpower and gives this stout a surprisingly well-balanced taste.

Tap: Poured a black color stout with a small brown foamy head with good retention and some light lacing. Aroma of roasted malt with cinnamon is quite pleasant. Taste is at first a mix of cinnamon and roasted malt with light bitterness but then the cayenne notes kicks in way too strongly which makes the aftertaste really hot. Body is average with good carbonation. The cayenne adds an interesting edge tot his beer but is just too dominant at the end of the day.

On tap at the National Capital Beer Festival. Black mahogany with brown head. Roasted malts coffee grinds, cayenne. Green peppers, moderate carbonation and body, acidic spicy and dry. I’d like to try the beer without the cayenne as there just seemed to be too much - on each sip the beer got progressively hotter and I actually didn’t finish mine because my stomach was starting to get unhappy (and I don’t mind heat at all).

Enjoyed at the National Capital Craft Beer Week. First brew when I got there. Pours a dark brown colour with a beige head, very long retention and creamy lace. Coffee nose with some roasted malts. Smooth, almost creamy, and wet mouthfeel. Beautiful spicy dark malt taste with the warming finish from the cayenne pepper. Eventually, nice fruity notes come out, kind of like cherries. Very nice and very well-blended. Can’t wait to get this in bottles at the LCBO and a wicked start to the festival.

Pours black with a diminishing frothy tan head. Aroma is of coffee, cinnamon, roasted malt. Taste is initially sweet, quickly leading to warmth from both cinnamon and cayenne. Roasty/chocolatey bitter notes in the end balance this out nicely enough. You really have to like chili and chocolate together to get through a pint of this...
