3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Pitch black with light brown head as stouts usual come. Smells very malty. Taste is soft and not too alcoholic. There’s sweet malts. Aroma is perhaps bread/roast with a bit of dough. Palate is quite nice, not too flat but not fizzy drink either. Body is pretty thick. I only wish this would have more complex aroma.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
From bottle at De Pilsener Club, Amsterdam on 9 April 2011. Very dark brown colour with a generous tan head.. Not quite opaque. Dry with plenty of powdery chocolate and some burnt malt notes. Firm mouthfeel with a slightly prickly carbonation. Straightforward but satisfying. Very enjoyable and extremely drinkable. And I can’t really think of a better place to drink a recreation of a very old beer.

2.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20
31st March 2009
Light and frothy, more like a porter. Smooth malt, mild roastiness. Faint trace of something herbal. Dry malty finish. Goes down easy enough but it’s such a simple beer it defies easy description!

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
(Bottle, Café Arendsnest, Amsterdam, 1 Aug 2010) Black colour with frothy, beige head. Malty, roasted nose with distinct notes of chocolate, cocoa and coffee. Malty, roasted taste with coffee, dark chocolate, dark rye bread and a dry finish with a generous coffee bitterness. Slightly more than medium body, dry and fairly bitter. Well balanced and quite excellent stout.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
In short: A typical roasted stout with strong coffee notes. Simple but effective
How: Tap at In De Wildeman, Amsterdam
The look: Black body topped by a medium beige head with medium retention
In long: Nose is very roasted with strong notes of coffee. Taste is very straightforward. Roastiness and a coffee flavor dominates the beer. Some fruity notes add some complexity. Moderate sweetness level. Medium body with a lively carbonation. This is a very standard roasted stout like so many others but the execution is without flaws. I liked it. Description states “Brewed by De Schans with special permission from Heineken”. And now all De Shans’ brewery friends laugh at it making the “pishhh” whip sound.

Brown weak head. Black colour. Aroma is malty with coffee and bitter chocolate notes, slightly hearthy. Flavor is malty too with coffee tones, a bit watery, ending in a smooth roasty finish. Light to medium bodied.

2.8 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 13/20
On draft at De Wildeman. Jet black in colour with moderate carbonation. Aromas are of red grapes, dark chocolate, and a bit of tar. More of the grape and chocolate thing going on in the mouth, but with a dry chalky note on the finish. Seems very light bodied for 7% alcohol. Average at best.
