"Original recipe of 1949 from Van Vollenhoven Brewery in Amsterdam. Brewed by De Schans with special permission from Heineken. The label on the bottle is a replica of the original label. Refermented in the bottle. " When I was in the Pilsener Club, Amsterdam, Monday 17th March, the bottle I was given was labelled Schans Stout, 6.5%. The barman told me Schans were no longer able to call it Van Vollenhovens. It tasted the same as the V V labelled bottle I remember on my last visit. I presume that Heineken have withdrawn their permission for Schans to use the name?

On tap at Arendsnest. Dark brown pour with white head. Aroma is quite interesting, roasty notes, light smokiness even, fruity (raisins), hazelnut. Taste is sweet, roasty malt flavor, just a hint of smoke, nutty, semi-dry finish. Palate is rich and creamy. I really enjoyed this one, nice traditional beer.

Bottle @home (lost notes in May found them today). Pours black. The nose is a little disappointing but the taste does make up for it. I touch of smoke/oak with a wee touch of sweetness which makes it like a good rack of BBQ ribs. This beer is better than the sum of its overall parts.

Dark brown body with lingering ring of tan head. Super sweet chocolate nose, earthy freshly watered soil underneath. Firm but fair initial taste, fairly cooling mouthfeel and not as sticky sweet as I thought/hoped. Not the smoothest of chocolate palates, touches of fig and overbearing grain in the midrange, before a clamy sweet finish. No real notion of roasted anything but solid enough to allow a spread of flavour for the ABV.
Thanks to LONick for the bottle. I think I really thought if it was special enough for ’special permission’ to be brewed to limited volume it would be more impressive in some aspects, but just keeps within the lines of a neat and unsweet stout.

Bottle, courtest of LONick, his house for his wife’s 40th, Edinburgh

Noord Holland Bierfest 2008. Poured black with a large tan head. Aroma of dark fruit and softly sweet malt. Medium to full body, flavour of dark fruit, mildly roasted chocolate malt and coffee hints. Dry, slightly bitter aftertaste.
